Since, I am starting to look for a companion for Franz, I returned to the website/shelter I found him at. There is a three year old female cat with one eye. She lost the eye due to infection when she was just a kitten. The remaining eye's vision, while not blind is poor. Otherwise she is in good health. I am waiting to hear from the shelter, but in the meantime I'd like some feedback from you guys. One of the reasons I want a companion for Franz is to increase his exercise/play. I was told by the shelter thay he loved to play with his toys. He loves his toys here, however I don't think he is playing like he used to. Would a partially blind cat be hindered from playing? If anyone has experience with a blind cat, I would appreciate your input. I also thought since a lot of the same cats are still on the website, Franz might "know" them. Do you think cats remember each other? The blind cats name is Petit Ma...isn't that adorable!

I have a one eyed kitty, and one of my good friends has a cat who is blind. To be honest, it really doesn't stop them from playing. Our one eyed kitty LOVES to play and will chase a lasor light all over the room. She can still see out of the other eye but her depth perception is a bit off.
Our friends with the totally blind kitty does like to play, she is just a little more cautious. Once they get the layout of the house they are in, they do everything by scent and sound.
As for cat remembering each other, it's possible and I have seen it happen on occasion but that I think is an exception to the rule. Once seperated for periods of time, they have to start all over again.

Cats can remember each other after being separated, but sometimes if a cat is covered with strange scents (ie after a vet stay, a cat may smell like the hospital, other cats, dogs, the staff, etc) the others will not treat the cat like an old friend :p

I had two blind kittens- Tag and Marbles. Both kittens were born blind, Marbles was brain damaged due to distemper. The kittens caught it in utero. Tag was totally remarkable, unless you looked at him, you really didn't know he was blind. He would be the first cat to catch a fly that got in the house, simply by listening, leaping and scoring everytime. We never moved our furniture, made sure food and water bowls and litter pan were always in the same spots. They passed away early from complications of the distemper, but while they were with us, they both were pure delights!

I have a one eye rescue dog , he was born with one eye . He is doing great with only one eye . Patch always walks a little tillt so the one eye he has is in the mittle . It really don't hinter him in play and run at all . My boston t. lost eye sight in one eye due to abuse and he is just fine too , just like Patch . Now my neighbours has a older cat , he is 15 years old and has lost eye sight due to his age . He still is comming over to eat at my place every day and I also notice he has lost hearing too . Silvester is his Name , walks more with caution (sp) but he is doing good with not seeing . I do think he is seeing shades though , but not sure of that . I think it would be a wonderful thing if you get this cat for Franz . I am sure they both will do fine after a slow intro .

Animals have the amazing ability to quickly adapt to disabilities, it won't stop Petit Ma from being a good companion for Franz.

What a wonderful thing you are doing,

Hi from Clover and Shamrock. We are siblings and need to be kept together because Shamrock is blind and he needs me to help him get around. He follows me by hearing the bell on my collar. Shamrock and I love each other and we hope you can look beyond Shamrock's disability and give us a home so we can stay together.

The bell is a great idea! I guess that would make Franz a seeing-eye CAT for Petit Ma. Humm, wonder if we could get a tax break...

I'm waiting for the shelter to call me back!!!

Petite Ma
Cat
Domestic Short Hair-black and white

Size: Medium
Age: Young
Sex: Female
I.D:

Notes: This sweet as can be angel lost her eye when she was just three months old due to a severe infection. Now three years old, she is a great cat; full of affection, Petite Ma is wonderful with people as well as other household feline's. She is NOT special needs as posted exactly: she is just fine and does not need any further medical attention, but due to surgery at a young age, her eyesight in the remaining eye was affected. Although not totally blind, she does not see things in detail. Well, what's done is done. Thank the stars she still has a chance at a good life. And let me tell you she lives life to the fullest. She is always the first in her foster home to meet and greet whoever comes through the door. To meet her is to fall in love. She is 100% house-trained, tested for felv/fiv negative and is altered. Petite Ma has a daughter that goes by the name of Gidgette. We here at Feline Rescue are hoping to find them a perfect home together. To learn more about Gidgette just find her in our adoption list.***

***Gidgett is no longer on the site, so I assume she was adopted.
This pet is: up to date with routine shots, already house trained, altered

To attach a pic, click on "Manage Attachments." Once you locate the file, simply click upload. The reason it might not be uploading is because the picture is too large. You should get a message if that's the case. I think the file must be smaller than 32kb (?) and it must also be not larger than 400 x 400 pixels.

Re: one-eyed cats. We had to have Flowerbelle's eye removed because of a virus, and it hasn't affected her one bit. Well - actually she must have been spending a fair amount of energy fighting the virus, because now that her eye's been removed, she has SO MUCH ENERGY, lol!

But like Sandie's kitty, our little girl doesn't let being one-eyed affect her in the least. Her depth perception is a bit off, which can result in some rather humorous antics - but she never falls - just almost. She romps all over the house, all over the various cat trees. She loves to climb up into the cabinets - the one thing she won't do that the other cats do is jump long distances. She'll jump down, but not up. She'll jump to each level of the cat tree (four levels, six feet) rather than straight up to the top. But it doesn't affect her interaction with the other cats (we have four others) at all. It never occurred to us to us bells on the other cats. I think that would drive us insane, LOL! Either way it wouldn't matter because she's also deaf. But despite the one-eye thing, for some reason she can keep track of that red dot better than any of them. She does lose her toy mice when she flips them around - but only for a few seconds.
