Do any of you have superstitions. My mother had many. Putting an umberella up indoors, shoes on the table, walking under a ladder all meant bad luck. Breaking a mirror and you got 7 years bad luck. If I black cat ran across your path it was very, very lucky but if it ran back again across your path it was very unlucky.
If you dropped a fork you would have a female unexpected visitor, a knife was a male unexpected visitor (I don't know what happened if you dropped a spoon).

What are yours?

I personally know people who still believe in the old superstitions about black cats being unlucky, and even get nervous if a black cat crosses their path. I owned Midnight for 13 1/2 years, so of course, I know better.

I always touch wood, if I say something that tempts fate. And throw a pinch of spilled salt over my shoulder. An itchy palm of the hand means money is coming my way. And I still think that bad news comes in threes, that's sort of a superstition.

I personally Will never own a black Cat. And won't go inside of a house where one resides, Will turn and find a new way to go if one crosses my path. Right palm itches your gonna meet a friend. Left palm itches you going to come into money, your ear rings someone is talking about you, Walking under a ladde, breaking a mirror, opening an umbrella inside, salt over the left sholder, and knocking on wood. These are all things I believe in. and things that I do/avoid. what can I say I'm overly cautious

Mom alway said that, if your nose itches, you're going to have company. Others have told me that it means that you're going to kiss a fool.

When I go to a casino, I carry my purple rabbit's foot.

I know there is a lot of superstitions about black cats, perhaps it is because they were once connected to belonging to witches. I absolutely adore black animals, cats, dogs horses whatever. My favourite two cats that I have ever owned were both black with not a spot of white on them. (Perhaps I was a witch in another life)

I was told an old rhyme about itching noses:

Inside invitation
outside vexation.

Dear WillowsMom,

Do you have two brain cells to rub together? Black cat are just that. Black cats. I own 9 all black cats. That is just the color they happened to be. Whatever. I don't concern myself with color, I just accept cats as cats.

I don't do supersitions. I have enough myth and lore in Arizona. I live about a half mile away from Bull Mountain in the Cerbat Range. It is said that is were "Death Trap" is, "The Rock that Kills". Do a search. Check it out. The Cerbat also have the "Cerbat Mustangs". A isolated remnant herd of the original Spanish mustangs.

Then there are the Superstitions. Ever heard of the "Lost Dutchman"? This range is Sacred to the Apache. There Thunder God live there. Do you know who many behead bodies they have found? And that is only the ones they have found. This is a very wild and rugged area.

I am supersitious about supersitions. Does that make sense? That is if I believe that something is bad luck, then it turns out that doing that thing will indeed result in bad stuff. It has occured several time. So to prevent it I have to be non-supersitious. In other words out of sight out of mind.

Another thing I believe in is that bad stuff happens in three. But that does not really seem supersitious.

Bumpy, I think I know what you mean. My mother had a green dress when she was very young and the first two times she wore it something bad happened to her and she was convinced it was because she wore green.

I won't own a green car. In addition to the fact that I don't like green, the first car that I ever dented was a green '66 LeMans.

As for black cats, I LOVE black cats. When I adopted Buddy, I was looking for a black cat. Oh well, he's MOSTLY black.

My mom was very superstitious--still is.

We didn't open umbrellas in the house, walk under ladders, walk with one shoe on and one off (bad luck), we touched wood alot, cringed if a black cat ran back across our path, never broke a mirror, threw salt over the shoulder, if the rocking chair started rocking by itself, there was a death coming, never voiced what bad could happen because once you said it it would happen, I still won't kill crickets in the house for fear of bad luck. Believed death came in 3's and it does...I could go on and on

BTW: a spoon dropped means a child will come visit.

I do not believe in any superstitions. To me, there is no such thing. I mean, how is throwing salt over your shoulder going to change anything? Or knocking on wood? Opening an umbrella in the house, I never understood that one, so I did it all the time.
As for black cats, they are just that, a cat. I had black cats and never had bad luck back then. About the only bad luck was to one of my black cats, he had kidney failure
But, he had a good long life. About the only thing I do believe in are ghosts, I have them here, ask my wife.
Ummm Goblin, did you really need to be sarcastic to WillowsMom
Maybe it was just me and I read it wrong.

I thought Goblin was a bit off with Willows Mum too. Willows Mum was just answering a question quite honestly.

Oh no! I could never believe in ghosts, I am too scared to believe in them.

When I was younger, I believed that if my arms, hands, legs or feet touched while I was sleeping...what I dreamed would become a reality...so I used to sleep as spread out as possible.

I do avoid stepping on cracks or walking under ladders....I don't know that I "believe" these superstitions...I simply have done it for sooooo long it's just ingrained in me.

Dear Amber and Cilla,

Yes, sometime I just say what I think. I don't sugar coat my words. I was insulted. WillowsMom just told me that she wouldn't enter my home. I am Irish. It is not so much superstition as culture. The Irish are in to hospitality. When I am told that someone will not enter my home because I own black cats, I was Very Insulted.

Come visit me. I have Starbucks coffee or a wide variety of tea and teacups, (Belleck, Royal Albert and Noritake, Coffee cups, StarTrek) I will feed you also, I make a very good homemade, chicken soup, with leeks and turnups, and a mean Madras Curry chicken dish.
