How do I train my cat to stop meowing?

My girlfriend just moved in 7 days ago, along with her came 2 cats. One of the cats likes to get up at 3 am and meow pretty much non stop til 4:30 am ...every day. After reading other websites on meowing, I would describe the meow as 'pleasant'....and he only does it at 3 am.
Any advice on how to allow me some good sleep, without kicking out the girlfriend and the cats?

Thanks!!!!

Are you a cat person

If not you have alot to learn. My cats start running through the house at midnight and can last for hours. I wear earplugs when sleeping, so I suggest at 3am to get out the ole ear plugs, because cats will be cats and we love them

Sounds like she's just reacting to the stress of having new territiory. Remember moving is stressful for them too, they just can't express it by fighting w/the significant other like us crazy humans do.
Has your girlfriend purchased any Feliway or Rescue Remedy? either of these products will help calm the kitties as they adjust to the new digs. Also, since she's used to having cats, she may not even hear them (I'm a pretty solid sleeper myself - slept thru tornado weather before). Let her know you think the kitties are stressed and they may need some attention.

I say, enjoy the meowing, I think it is cute. Of course, I can sleep through most anything. With my job, I have learned to sleep when I can, wether it is day or night. Your girlfriend's cats may be stressed over the move and feel uncomfortable there. It will take some time for them to get used to their new home. Get some ear plugs, that will do the trick.
Enjoy the cats, they are the best pet and friend you can have

How did you manage to keep a bobcat without someone turning you in? That animal is beautiful. It doesn't look like a mix. You are so lucky.

Welcome to the board. You'll find answers to many cat-related questions here.

Feed the cats some canned food and get them involved in active play just before bedtime. This will increase the chances that they will sleep through the night. A bit of kibble left out overnight can also help, so they can help themselves if they get hungry. If you don't want to train them to demand attention in the middle of the night, ignore the meows at that time, difficult as it seems at first. Gradually, when they discover that no one pays attention, the meowing will diminish.

First off find out from your girlfriend if this is normal behavior. If it isn't you would be wise to take the cat to the vet and be sure it is not suffering from some health issue that is stress related.

You can do interactive play with this cat prior to bedtime at least 10 minutes of vigourous play and feed the cat a bowl of warmed wet food prior to your head hitting the pillow.

Burn a night light for the cat, play soft classical music all night in the background investigate the Farnum Pet Feliway Comfort Zone Room Diffuser and just give the cat time to adjust to the new surroundings.
If the cat starts missing the litter pan, or doesn't want to eat or shows any other signs of not being normal, please take the cat into a vet to be checked out.

If you know the cat is healthy ignoring it while it is crying is the best way to get him to stop.

I have nothing to add except that you should really try the suggestions provided. The canned food before bedtime works like a charm for me.

You are correct, Amber is 100% Bobcat and not a mix. There is no risk of someone turning me in, it is legal to own such an animal in my state. There are a few rules however. 1) I do need a state permit that is renewed every year. 2) Amber is not a wild caught bobcat. She came from a breeder in Montana. Yes, she is a wildcat, but was raised in captivity and not taken out of the wild. It is illegal to keep a wild caught bobcat and a wild caught bobcat would not make a good pet. I do not recommend just anyone deciding to own such an animal either. You must be prepared to give up a lot of time, patience and love to this beautiful animal. My wife and I do just that

In the state I'll be moving to it's legal to keep exotics as long as you have enough money to build them the right enclosure. IF I ever have enough money I may get a tiger...better me than someone whop will stick him in a cage.

is he neutered? He could be picking up a female in heat and might be voicing his demands to get outside to her. Thats the only thing I can think of, lol!
