Canned food similar to Nutro pouches

When I had two cats, I was feeding them Nutro Natural pouches. They love this type of food that is bits/chunks of food in gravy and prefer it greatly over the pate style of food that is all mushed together. In fact, they usually walk away from that entirely.

Anyway, I have a 3rd kitty now, and I am trying to be as economical as possible with food, so I was wondering if there was a canned food available that is the same style as the nutro pouches, but comes in a can that is 5.5oz or larger. All three of my cats are still kittens, so I was thinking with a large size can, I can feed them all dinner with just one.

Any recs? Thanks for your help!

I could have posted this same question. My cats are the same way. They (esp. my female) turn up their noses at anything that isn't little pieces in some kind of sauce.

Ruby and Max love the Nutro pouches and eat them all the time. I've found the Authority foods (Petsmart brand) have good ingredients (no by products, etc-- check them out, you may be surprised) and there are two varieties that are 'cuts in sauce'-- chicken, and ocean fish. There are other varieties that are just the pate style, and except for the beef and liver (and even that is a stretch), my two won't eat them.

So-- as far as canned food goes, mine eat the Authority and Nutro. I'm hoping you get some more replies because I'd like to find something else that they might enjoy.

Thanks Jili. I don't have a Petsmart in my city, but I am moving in 5 weeks and there is one there so I will definitely check out their Authority brand. If anyone else has more recs, they are much appreciated!

Yes, thanks for the tip Jill! I guess I need to be reading labels more carefully - I'd overlooked Authority, thinking it was akin to the "store brand" generics you can get at the grocery. And I've got a coupon for a free 4lb bag of Authority dry as part of my adoption pkg!! I'll go ahead and take advantage of that now!

Strange, Bella prefers the pate style - I gave her some turkey dinner Fancy Feast and she hardly touched it. Maybe because she's older and her teeth were hurting for so long. (but it may also be because she was getting wise to the "meds in the meal" bit)

I was also giving Dori the Nutro Natural pouches. Friskies makes pouches just like it called Friskies Fine Cuts. Also, if you look at the Friskies cans some are sliced or shredded meat. Dori LOVES those as well. Even more than the Nutro. I just gave her shredded turkey and cheese this morning and she chowed down on it. SHe will not eat the normal style canned cat food that is all mushy, she walks away with her nose in the air!

RicaLynn-- I haven't used the Authority dry food. Truthfully, the ingredients didn't particularly impress me--but you may feel otherwise when you take a look. I found out about the Authority canned foods from somebody on this site.

I would love to learn about more 'foods in gravy' that have ingredients that I like. Anyone else have any suggestions? Are the Natural Balance canned foods 'pate' style?

I wasn't particularly impressed with the Friskies ingredients so I have passed on those ones. I try to buy food that doesn't contain any by-products at all. Thanks though!!

That's why I was switching from Friskies to the Nutro. I started learning about all the by-products.... The problem with the Nutro was that she would lick all the gravy but not eat the chunks. I have tried stuff other than the Friskies but she won't eat it either. I only give her a small bit of wet food in the morning and the rest of the time she has dry Science Diet. Maybe I will try the Authority also.

I thought I'd bring this back to the top because I found another one quite by accident yesterday.

I had bought a can of Nutro Gourmet Classics-- the California Chicken Supreme variety. I didn't think they would eat it, but I thought I'd give it a try. When I opened it up I was pleasantly surprised-- it is chunks in sauce!
I'm interested in the other varieties, so I've got an email in to Nutro to ask them which other varieties are like this also. I had just assumed that they were all the smooth pate style. I'll post the response if anyone is interested (when I get it).

Most of the Nutro gourmet classics are chunks in gravy. The ones that aren't are clearly market "pate". I feed Sam all of these "stew" varieties. Bailey won't eat them. She prefers the pouches, fish if she can get it. And she can tell the difference, thank you very much.

Sammie5, how timely! I just got an email from Nutro Products about this. They told me the same thing you just posted. I'm going to try some other varieties, but I think it might be a slow road--they didn't eat all of the California Chicken Supreme. Maybe after they've had it a few times. I guess it's worth a try, though.

I can recommend Active Life canned cat foods as having both some that are juicy (the shredded varieties and the chunky) and some that are pate (pate-fricassee). The ingredients, if you are not uncomfortable with the use of tomato paste, are comparable to better (in that it's human grade ingredients) than Nutro.

Problems - only comes in a 5.5 oz can, extremely popular and hard to find, expensive.

If I can think of others, I'll post another note.
