I am soon hoping to have a new addition to my household a large tom cat from the local rescue center. I'm wanting to install a cat flap for him so he can come and go as he pleases but I'm not sure how long he should be kept inside for before being allowed to go outside. How long does a cat take to get used to its new home and sorundings?

Hello and welcome Daniel. I had a cat flap for a long time in the many homes I've had but now I dont - my lot are mainly indoor now. It often depends on the cat as to how long he takes to get used to things but there is a lot of good information and advise around here to make it easier.
I have usually kept them in for about 6 weeks to let them get used to the sights out of the window and then let them out under supervision for a few minutes at a time with the door open so they can scoot back in if nervous. And I definately didnt let them out at night - cat flap well and truly locked.
Do you need to let your cat out - indoors is so much safer.
Well done you for taking on a resuce cat.

I live in a village in the country so it should be pretty safe for him and it would be a shame for him to be cooped up inside when he could be going outside hunting and stuff.

Thanks, a friend at work does the cat rescue thing and gave me the idea. I don't really have the time at the moment for kittens so an adult is the best choice I think.
