Cat in an open window

I walk past an apartment house every day, and often see a cinnamon-pointed Siamese sitting in the window of a second-floor apartment. Today she was sitting on the outer sill of the open window. Since these people are renting, they might not be allowed to put cat nets on their windows. I have a piece of transparent net that would be big enough to cover the window she was in today, and which wouldn't be noticeable from the street. Do you think it would be weird for me to knock and ask the people if they'd like to have it? I feel funny doing it (I don't know how I'd react if a perfect stranger did it to me), but I'm really afraid the cat will fall. The last time I saw a cat doing that, I photocopied some information on cat nets and stuck it in the people's mailbox.

Hi Jcat. I know how that feels because my next door neighbours let their cats on the outside sill of their bedroom window. It is so high. I love the idea you had of the photocopied info. I think I may do that as these neighbours are not the best in the world and don't like me.

jcat, maybe you could put photocopied information in the mailbox like you did before. Only this time include your name and phone number and a short note explaining your reason for being concerned and that you will give them some transparent netting if they are interested.

That's good advice - I'll try that. The people who got the photocopies didn't put in screens/netting (they live catercorner to where I work), but they apparently now air the apartment with the inner doors closed, since I haven't seen their cat on the windowsills since then. I have a terrific article with statistics on cats falling out of high-rise buildings that I've saved and can include.

Or you can maybe put the netting on their doorstep and leave a little note saying if they want here's some netting to put up and give them the sheet about cats falling . Maybe include your name and number in case they need help putting it up? Make sure that you tell them that you're a cat owner too and that you were just concerned for their cats saftey so they don't think you're some kind of nut or something....

I followed Lorie's advice and put the photocopies and a short note with my name and address in the mailbox. The woman called about 10 minutes ago, and is going to stop by any minute now to take a look at the nets we have in the windows. She said she didn't know you could get transparent nets - their landlord nixed black ones.

Yay! I a glad that it worked out well. I was hoping she would understand why you left it and not take offense to it. Good job

jcat, could you tell me where to get some of that transparent netting? I have the same problem with my landlord and that would be perfect to use. Thanks in advance!

I buy it here in Germany from the following company: www.katzennetz.de.
These companies also have it: www.BalkonNetze.de and www.nets-for-cats.de That last site is also available in English.
You might be able to find a supplier in your area if you do a Google search. Companies that make fishing nets might have it.

She and her husband both came, and they took the piece of net I offered. Usually you thread cord through the outer edge of the netting and stretch it over hooks attached to the window frame or walls. These people have metal window frames, and are going to try attaching it with two-sided tape. If it works out, they'll probably secure a few other windows.
