Have you already mailed your taxes, or are you a last minute payer?

In Puerto Rico The Departamento de Hacienda calls it "Contribuciones sobre ingresos" (Contributions over Income), but its the largest euphemism on earth for the word Taxes.

Our tax form arrived back in February, and we went immediately to the ceremony of stepping over it with your filthiest shoes, kicking it a bit, and perhaps spitting on it so we later mail it like that. But we haven't yet mailed them. We are sooo last minute we usually pay them on the very day of April 15! Anyway, it seems we threw away the form or my cats share our hatred of them and shredded it to oblivion, for it we can't find it.
Oh well... we will just get another one downtown and jump on it with my muddiest sneakers and get them as filthy as possible and then mail it with the check on the dirties/crumpled/yellowish envelope we can find. We do that every year.

Ask my mom... she is the one who does it
. Nah, just for the joke of it. And it is somewhat therapeutic for all of the unpleasantness and problems of the dreaded tax season, as you vent off a bit of it.

Every month, real nice envelopes we reserve them normal use, the envelopes that are starting to get yellowish or have cat paw prints or such, instead of throwing them away, we use them for the monthly bills.

Not in Puerto Rico!!! Hacienda is so corrupt that they don't send those refunds even if you paid in excess. They are supposed to, but they never send it. They are so money hungry that we've had the problem of a $976 debt that they claim was not paid, and we have repeatedly sent them the photocopies of the canceled checks and they keep sending letters saying its unpaid and demanding that it is paid and threatening of all the penalties involved with tax evasion. And there are a lot of people with cases like that. In one case they even froze the assets of someone who according to them had not paid his taxes.... only to have the cancelled checks and bank account statements appear at the courtroom.

We once sent the taxes one day late, and we got back a letter saying that we had paid our taxes late... listing so many felonies and penalties involved with that we were surprised they did not threaten with the death penalty... and that it constituted a fine that must be payed to them of... US$0.87. We made a check to them of 87 cents. I am still trying to imagine them trying to cash that check.

I hope you understand that our blood always boils about those guys not for the money, but for their attitude... even more when we think that a good portion of that money will go to corrupt politician's pockets.

Why Victor,
it's starting to sound like everyone in Puerto Rico is corrupt. Let's see now...from what I remember you have told us that the police, judges, elected officials and now the Hacienda are all corrupt.

Its not far from the truth. The truth is that corruption in the government is so common that it has grown to be accepted as a fact of life. A few hours ago I got the news on the radio that the FBI had arrested the secretary of state of the past governor, and the campaign secretary of the 2000 campaign of the anexionist party.

In Puerto Rico, there is a common attitude, which has been part of our culture for centuries which is disregard for the law. The law gets the same treatment here as bathroom tissue paper. And that exists everywhere from minor traffic laws, to illegal rum, to billion dollar rackets in the government.

Now that I think about it... perhaps this thread is better suited for IMO instead of the Lounge. Sorry if I commited a mistake by placing it here.

Movin' on up!
I e-filed Bill's and mine, back in January. Refunds were in the bank, within 14 days and spent, within 14 minutes
. (Actually, I owe the state $58.00 and will mail it, first of the week.)

As for defacing forms and envelopes - that's rather childish IMO.
