This is terrible! Mom ate two of her babies and the third one is alive and (seemed) fine. She is feeding it and caring for it, BUT, upon closer inspection we noticed that the poor thing is missing its tail and hind leg......mom ate them! Will this kitten survive? What should we do?? Never had kittens before! I am distraught!! Please help!

Please take this kitten to an emergency clinic and get it put to sleep immediately! Then on Monday take momcat in and get her spayed.

Put that kitten out of it's misery NOW

Please log off the computer and call the vet and put that little one out of it's misery. It will not survive! Momcats do this sometimes, they do it because they are stressed and to young to have kittens, they do it because the kittens are sick, or the mom is sick- Please call the vet NOW the little one is suffering!

PLEASE do as Hissy advised and get the little one to the vet to end it's suffering.
Also please call your vet first thing in the morning to set up a spay appointment for mom.

This reply is late because I just joined this site. I am confused as to why people wanted the kitten to be put down. Yes, it was suffering, but wouldn't another option be to take it to the vet and get help for it?

NO!!! The reason the mom cat ate two of her babies and has partially eaten this one is because the kittens most likely have a BIRTH DEFECT that only the mother is picking up on! She is doing what nature is telling her to do...she is trying to put the babies out of their misery. Please get this baby to a vet and get it euthanized!

There are other reasons that moms turn on their kittens. One, if it was a fairly young mom and she got over stressed by suddenly having to care for kittens, she could turn on them. Or if she is ill in someway like distemper (NOT that this mom has that) or some sort of disorder, she will turn on her kittens.

The kindest thing to do was to call the vet and get the kitten put down, as it was suffering needlessly. Also hope the mom was spayed as well to prevent this heartache happening in the future.

Hissy, if the little one is put to sleep can the mother cat be spayed straight away?

From what I understand, a spayed mom will still give milk to her kittens. In this instance if this cat had been mine. I would have spayed her and watched her carefully to see that she was still producing milk and not harming the other kittens. If she wasn't giving milk or was prone to attacking more kittens, I would have hand raised them. But not everyone can hand raise the newborns, so the prudent thing here would be to watch the mom carefully and as the kittens grew stronger and stronger, and are finally weaned, get the mom spayed. And not let her outside again until she was.
