Talk about role reversals...

Whenever our dogs have come into contact with any of our cats there is certain behavior we typically expect. Especially when they haven't been around the cat in awhile it is common to see them licking their lips. (If they had lips.) We try to discourage this, as cats are not food.

One of my dogs, Jasmine, has been the most socialized with the cats, to where I felt comfortable leaving her unsupervised around any of them. At least in the house, outside she loves to tree them.

Lately, I have noticed she is more apprehensive around them when I let them in the house. (The cats are generally outdoor cats.) Last night was a surprise. My mom's cat, Oreo, was in the house, wandering around as if she owned the place. She was even hopping up on the desk and laying between the monitor and the keyboard, on top of my papers, of course.

Several times Oreo went in and out of my room where my dog was. One time I heard a commotion like they were fighting, but it only lasted 30 seconds. I called my dog out because I knew she would come to her name and I wanted to make sure both were okay. Jasmine (Jazzy) came to me, Oreo following a minute later. Jazzy hid under my legs, the chair and even the desk.

Oreo walked around, back and forth, like she was stalking the dog. Then I had to laugh because when Oreo was looking right at Jazzy, I swear I saw that cat lick her lips!

I want to share my role reversal too! In my house it is the cats and the birds (big birds). Amusing to see a cat running down the hallway with an amazon hot on his tail.

Cats are on laps where bird wants to be? Not a problem, bird walks on cat until the cat gets annoyed and leaves, and then it is time for "ET" fingers (parrots have for long toes) on the cat face. If that doesn't work, then it is time to play "catch the kitties tail".... now THAT will get the cat to move.

I sometimes imagine that my cats brag to the neigboorhood cats "We live with lots of BIRDS in tho house!".... they just don't tell the ohters cats the realy living situation....

LOL!

I know that at my parent's home, if Rusty and Sammy start fighting (hissing/growling), Bubba (big black GENTLE lab) will start barking to stop it. Actually, he'll start barking if anyone in the house starts arguing. (often my brother and I will start yelling at each other and have Bubba running in and barking at us to stop!)

Guess in my parent's home, the dog rules (ONLY when the cats DOESN"T want to rule!!)

I have 8 cats and 4 dogs, the current score is:
Cats rule in their eyes, dogs allow them to exist on the planet. All in all a good trade off.

Movin' on up!
Opie and Buddy refuse to have anything to do with dogs. As long as the dogs don't try to slobber on Opie, he WILL be in the same room with them.

Rowdy, on the other hand, views dogs as large animate cat toys. She and the dogs wrestle, nip, paw and lick each other. Rowdy will sit on a chair or table, at eye level with Pearl and wash Pearl's face. Pearl seems to have caught on to this bit of cat etiquette and returns the favor.
