Should I trap this cat? When?

Scott,

I hope you can trap this sweet kitty, and hopefully find him or her a home. Ever since finding out about Marshmallow's cancer, I have a very soft spot for white kitties (espically ferals and strays) in my heart.

Yes I do, but all my photos are through Imagestation and it doesn't seem to work on this site. I'm not sure why cause it does on others??

Let me see if this one will work. This is Newman and if you look closly you'll see his ear-tip.

And here's FunnyFace:

Beautiful ferals, from Scott's world and Lisa's.

I have to agree with Mary Anne, especially that ginger and white peeking out would make a great Feral Care Banner. May I use these Lisa?? (Lisa has allowed me to use her photos before for Feral Care Banners - Check 'em out (and spread 'em around) on Save Samoa or Stray Pet Advocacy )

Edit to add: Oops! I just noticed that I was using the old terminology - Trap Neuter Release!
I'll have to change that tonight!

Trap, Neuter, Return.
Just makes the distinction that you return the cat to the same place, not just throw it out the door where ever you feel it's ok after the neutering (which, of course, we all know, but for the people who have never heard of this before...).

Yes! Please feel free to use these. The photographer was James Neal photgraphy, if that could be mentioned it would be nice, but not necessary.

I'm just a new kid on the catsite block, but I'll put in my two cents and say the cat has been TNR'd. I'd bet even money that he's been ear tipped. For me the tip-off (pardon the pun) is that there is a shadow on the pipe that corresponds to the ear. The shadow came from the flash.

As for the size of the tip, how much gets taken off is really dependent on the vet. Some take off more than others. I imagine some people who have worked in TNR long enough can look at a tip in a colony and know by how much was taken off who mostly likely did the cat!

As for whether to trap anyway, well that's one only you can decide. If based on his temperment in the trap, you decide to check (in a way that's safe for you and for him) to see if he's intact before taking to a clinic, that's probably the best way so if he's been done he can just be quickly released.

Oh yeah. Hi everyone. I'm Jim in Phoenix, AZ, though I expect to be in Kansas City within a few months.

"A feral friend" onboard...well yes, I've been referred to as feral more than once . . .<grin>

But thanks to everyone for the warm welcome.

I'll weigh in on topics now and then, but for the moment I have my hands full getting the house ready to sell and figuring out the best way to temporarily find a place for our six cats once we get to Kansas City. From the sound of it, I won't have any problem finding a way to get involved up there.

I'll be looking for help on this move thing, so I'll probably make a posting explaining what's going on in our lives and asking for help big time.

For now, I'll just say that if you don't have at least one ear-tipped cat living in your house (badge of courage someone once called it), you're just not living!

Attached is one of BYK (named Backyard Kitty back when he was just that), who, in spite of being the most timid of our bunch, has decided that sitting with us on the couch all night and watching TV is a mighty fine life indeed.

Then there's the way he rolls over and almost falls off the sewing machine cabinet if you start petting him.

Feral indeed.

Jim

What a handsome dude! We have an ear-tip at home also! I would post her picture but for some reason Imagestation doesn't work her. She was born in the park and lived there for about 1 1/2 years and decided she wanted to come home with us. She's wonderful, and oh so gentle. You'd never know she lived as a feral!

BYK thanks you for the kind words.

I just looked back through this thread so I should be up to speed. Scott has some great head shots of the ones he's been working with.

By the way, probably should let everyone know there are three colonies that I documented for AZCats several years ago, since there's discussion on ear-tipping. Also, if there are people who can put the photos to good use, just let me know you'd like to use them and they're free to any non-profit.

OK, here's the link to the start page for all three colonies. Click on any photo to bring it up big-time.

What wonderful pictures! If all of these photos don't prove that a TNRed and cared for colony is a healthy colony, I don't know what would!

So.....caught him/her. Took forever...eventually, a combination of tuna, catnip and sardine juice did the trick.

He/she isn't eartipped, but the damn ear is blocked in every picture! LOL!

We lifted the trap to try and get a good look on whether it was male or female, but we're not sure. I couldn't see any teats, but it's been awhile since I've seen a pregnant female cat, so I'm not sure how prominent they'd be.

I'm hoping it's not a female that has a litter somewhere...

But caught, nonetheless.

Another picture...

OH, and I forgot to mention - of course, while I'm doing this, I spot a small brown or gray tabby that I've never seen....ack...never ends...

I think this is #16 or #17?
