Hi, I'm new here, found this site when doing researches and thought it would be a good idea to ask for opinions.
My baby boy Sam is 6 years old and he's never been sick before.
On March 25th we took him to the vet for his annual wellness exams and distemper vaccine. We request every year a compete blood work to always be sure he's ok. The vet said the result was normal, he used to have white blood cells count a little high before, she said probably an allergy (he has them sometimes) or because he's just like that.
This time, white blood cells count was normal. And: red blood cells count, hematocrit and hemoglobin was a shade over the top. Total protein: a smidgen high. She said we should not worry about it, unless something happened.

A few day later, on March 30th I noticed that he was a little too sleepier than usual but it was raining and he sleeps practically all day when it rains. I kept observing him. Next day, a Friday he was still quiet and my husband and I were already worried so we called the vet and they said, bring him in tomorrow (Saturday, April 1st).

That day he seemed to be feeling better but still, we took him in and he's Doctor wasn't there and this doctor exams him and she said he had pain in his shoulder area and hip and legs area. Did fecal exams (negative). She suggested X-rays and I said sure. So they did X-rays and she said nothing abnormal. So she said he had some kind of muscular injury and gave him an injection (Eloxijet) and prescribed buprenorphine. Next day, Sunday he woke up feeling really well and as I didn't want him to be in pain, I gave him the buprenorphine (0.1ml as prescribed). After that he looked like he was in a coma. He was so sedated he would not even go eat or drink water or bathroom. I had to take him to the bathroom. My husband said to me not to give another dose that day and call the vet in the morning, so I did. She said stop giving it to him. Next day he was at least going to the bathroom by himself and eating and drinking a little bit. After a few days, he didn't want to drink or eat again, so called the doctor and insisted they saw him, although they were booked, I got an appointment Thursday, April 6th. His usual doctor was there and examined him and she said he had no pain. I said, but he's crying when you touch him and she said he was just not happy that she was touching him. She said there was nothing clinically wrong with him.

She prescribed mirtazapine as appetite stimulant and gave him a dose (1/4 every 3 days) and on the way home he started meowing like crazy and when we got home he ate a lot of food which I thought it was good. Then he lay down and I noticed he was shaking his head a bit and twitching his ear and whiskers and breathing really fast. I freaked out and called them and all she said is that mirtazapine shouldn't do that. After like an hour those things stopped and he was breathing normal. So this was second medication that scared us.

Urine test showed protein in urine. So she did another test and I just talked to her and she said it's not a considerable amount of protein.

But, since yesterday his appetite has declined and I'm sure he is in pain. He cries to get up and sit his butt down. He wants to play but he can't. He looks at places and wants to jump but he can't. He's been sleeping a lot or just lying down.

Does anybody know what this could possibly be?
I just called them again and trying an appointment with the other Doctor, the one who sad he has pain. At this point my husband and I are desperate.

Thanks in advance.

I am thinking a possible reaction to medication. Is he pooping?  He might have some kind of blockage. I could find no information on Eloxijet, so I'm not sure what that medication is. The only injectable antibiotic I'm familiar with is Convenia and the side effects of that are many.

I'm also thinking that your Sam might be sensitive to medications.

Initially, Sam may have been reacting to the distemper vaccine, and became sore.

It almost sounds like a whole cascade of reactions followed from the other meds that were given.

Buprenorphine is very strong, and can cause the reaction you describe, plus constipation which stephanietx, asked about.

Mirtazapine, some members here, have found caused muscle tremours, and rapid breathing, and asked their vets to be able to give 1/8th of a dose...so it must be strong, as well.

I'm not sure if your Vet would suggest flushing his system with sub-q fluids.

Ask your Vet about possible reactions to the distemper vaccine, and also the other meds that were given.

Especially the injectable meds.

(this Cat Site will be going down, at 1:00pm EST, today, because the platform is being changed over, but I think you can still read and do searches for older threads, and information, ..but will not be able to post until it's back up again. maybe a few hours, or maybe a few days...they don't really know.   http://www.thecatsite.com/t/337321/important-platform-upgrade#post_4258462)

Wishing you the best for Sam, @CarolineW, ...do what you feel is best for your guy.

Make sure he eats, and is well hydrated, and urinates and poops normally.

If he is still lethargic, then take him to your Vet, or even a third opinion.

I was able to see my replies before, not seeing them now though.

I got an appointment for Sam today and wish the vet doesn't prescribe psychiatric drugs for pain and appetite.

I feel really bad for my baby.

Just got home from the vet.

She said my Sam probably hurt his back hitting it somewhere or jumping.

She prescribed:
Prednisolone Syrup 15mg/5ml per (1ounce)
1mL by mouth twice daily for 7 days
Then 1ml by mouth once daily for 7 days
Then 1 ml by mouth every other day until gone

And

Buprenorphine (again) HCI/TGH (0.5mg/ml) #32 (1ml)
0.15 ml every 12 hours for 7 days

Has anybody had those given to their babies?

Thank you for the reply.
I replied yesterday but probably not showing anymore.

We went to the vet, got home like an hour ago and she said he's like this because of the pau. And it has increased. She prescribed Prednisolone and reduced the dosage of buprenorphine.
I posted about his prescription above, what do you think of the dosage? She said Prednisolone will help with the inflammation.

He was pooping, but didn't poop yesterday and today.

Thank you for the reply! I replied to you yesterday but not showing here.

Anyway, updating here I took him to the vet and she prescribed Prednisolone 15mg for at least 3 weeks. I wrote a reply on this thread explaining exactly how the dosage is. And buprenorphine she reduced the dose to half than before (0.15ml).

I'm really praying and hoping my baby will feel better now.

Hello C carolinew , so sorry for the delay in answering. (I had some technical issues trying to get back on the Site.)

How is your Sam doing now? Hoping that the meds that the Vet gave him, are helping to reduce any lingering symptoms, that he may still have. If Sam did hurt his back, then the anti-inflammatory steroid should help him, as well as the reduced dosage of the painkiller.
I can't comment on the dosages, as I am not a Vet, but starting off small with any meds, and then seeing how things go, seems to be the best, in case our sensitive animals over-react.

If you do have some time, please post back, and tell us how your Sam is doing?

Hi Cat Nap, no worries!
You got it right! That's exactly what the vet did (we went with the doctor who said he was hurt). First dose of Prednisolone and my baby boy was already feeling better. We are following the treatment and today we started the second week, so no more Buprenorphine from now on, just Prenisolone once a day for a week and then every other day until medication is gone. He's doing so much better, thank God!!!! I'm so happy that he's healing!!! I'm keeping an eye on him not to jump or run, he loves to play. lol

Thank you so much for the reply!!!!

Great News! Way to go, Sam!:woo:
So weird how the timing of the distemper shot was just a coincidence.
As long as Sam is getting better, ...that is all that matters.

It's great that he loves to play. He's still a young adult at 6 years old.
I suppose you have to make sure he does not do any crazy stunts, or high jumps. :rolleyes2:
(If you get the time, post a photo of him, here, if you like. You just use the 'upload a file' button, on bottom right, and choose 'full image'...not thumbnail.)
cheers, C carolinew and Sam. :wave2: :caticon:

I know, right? It's very weird. I thought he could have felt sore and maybe missed a jump or hurt himself someway?
Yes, he's lke a kitten, loves to play with his toys and he's very spoiled by mommy and daddy. and he got a water fountain and he's loving it!!!
And yes, I'm keeping an eye on him and keeping the door of a room that has a bunk bed locked so he doesn't go inside. And I took away part of his cat tree. not the whole thing because i did before and he was sad. Poor baby.
and sure, here's a picture of the child. hehehe This picture was taken before, so the higher part of the cat tree was still there.

Ohhh, Sam is an adorable tabby. :cloud9:
He must think you are acting quite strangely, by locking him out of the bunk-bed room, and taking away part of his cat tree.
I wonder if he thinks,..."Gee, my human is acting weird. First I go to the vet, then I'm not supposed to climb, then I can't sleep on the bunk bed, ...hey...not the tree again.":lovecat2:

I really like your photos. The first one kind of makes him look like an Artist, who is posing in front of the art he created and is now selling.:caticon:
The 2nd photo, is the Artist at play. Taking a break, and umm...eating some healthy Quaker Oats. :yummy:
They are great photos. thanks.

Thank you!! He loves complements. lol
I'm sure he's thinking that. He's too smart, he went to the vet so many times, the other day I changed clothes to go grocery shopping with my husband and was going to give him a little hug but he ran away. He must have thought, "Mommy is wearing something different than sweatpants, this is not good!" lol
That Quaker container is his tunnel to hunt toys, he loves it, I don't even throw it out. lol

LOL...yes, cats are totally smart. I guess he figures when you get back into your sweat pants, then, and only then...will you be safe to come near. :crackup:Oh, wow.
Could you imagine, if we always had to change our clothes, from good to casual, when going to the vets. So glad that our cats don't only come to us, while wearing pajamas.

Yes, that is a fabulous idea to keep his toys in, and use it for hunting/playing.
I just like how the photo turned out..."every cat deserves his mouse toy, with a quaker oats container."
I think you and I, would sell out the company. Maybe we should pitch the company some ideas. Sam would approve.:caticon:

Okay, I am having too much fun on your thread, now.
So it's another 2 weeks, and Sam will be off meds? Continued success and positive vibes for your guy. :vibes::caticon:
