She should see a vet. That is usually a sign of illness, and cats are excellent at hiding when they are unwell.

Hi @damian5000

What you are seeing is her inner eyelid. When this is visible it means that the cat is sick. It's impossible to know exactly what is wrong with her, but she should be checked over by a vet ASAP.

The heat could be affecting her. Have you seen this article?

It normally reached over 100F here during the summer and I have never seen my cats react like that. I agree that the third eyelid usually shows when they are sick. It could be heat related dehydration but it also could be something like parasites or an infection. She needs to see a vet as soons as she can to get treatmemt for whatever is wrong.

I'm unfortunately in the countryside of Thailand. The vets are far and few between. When the cooler weather in the evening came, the inner eyelid has now receded and her eyes look fine. I guess something to do with the heat. I will keep an eye on it. If it continues, I will have to take her into the city to a vet.

Definitely see a vet. They will examine the eyes to see if there's anything going on.

Has the cat been sneezing/runny nose/eyes lately? The vet will ask you this.

Has there been any changes in energy? Third eyelid could be illness or stress. But still need a vet check. Be sure there's plenty of water available. I have syringed water to my cats when it's very hot and we didn't have the ac running. If you have AC I suggest keeping the cat in there until you can get her to a vet. The heat can bother cats and they are good at hiding it.

Keep us posted!

Thanks for your reply.

No sneezing or runny nose that I noticed.

There is always water available for them.

If you can't get to a vet-you can check a few things.

Hydration- by lightly pinching the skin on the back of the neck/shoulders=you want to pull it up and let it go. You will be watching to see how fast the skin snaps back. You want the skin to snap back in a second or less. If it tents and doesn't go back fast like 3 seconds then your kitty could be dehydrated.

Gums=lift the side lip to see the gums. you want nice pink gums.

Pale grey gums are an emergency.

Run your finger along the gum=if it's slimmy slick then they are nice and hydrated. If it's tacky sticky then that's a sign of dehydration.

So these two things are what the vet usually checks right away.

I would suggest syringing water soon or see if she will lick the water off your finger. Water is a good tool to at least get her stabilized until you get her to the vet. If it's a long ride I suggest getting some water in her prior to your trip=she will be stressed and the extra hydration will help her feel better.

If you can't get her to drink water=give her wet food and add water to it and mash it with a fork to make it like a pudding type texture. These will help increase the fluids so your kitty can fight whatever is going on.

Okay, I will check gums now. And give her tuna juice.

I just looked again and the inner eyelid hadn't receded as I had originally thought.

Neck skin retracts over several seconds but doesn't stay tented.. gums are nice and pink, but dry.

I just gave her a good amount of watered down tuna juice and she lapped it all up no problem.

I will continue to monitor. If it stays like this, will bring her to a vet.

That's great! I wasn't sure how long it is for the trip to the vet. And not sure how much medicine they have access to. If the eyes are dry and irritated you can use saline solution as long as it's got nothing else in it. just salt water. but see how she does overnight and tomorrow ring the vet to see what your options are.

There MAY be one local guy, about 10 min up the road. But his #'s disconnected. Will drive up there (via moped) now and see if he's still there. If not, then an hour to the small city. If not there then 2 hours to the real city.

Her eyes still the same this morning (not good).
