Does anyone know where I can find a ceramic food dish like this (edited because link doesn't work now)?  Or maybe something similar that's about the same size, flat like a plate with just enough of a rim to keep the food from falling off the sides, and preferably without a design that might be too distracting?

We bought one at a dollar store several months ago, and now that I want to get a spare to have on hand in case it gets broken, I haven't been able to find one.

Oh, noes!  Sorry about that.  It worked a few minutes ago.  Lemme edit my post, and see if I can borrow a camera so I can take a picture of the ceramic dish we use.

Edited because my computer hates me today. ;-)

You can use quiche or creme brulee dishes. They are wide enough for a face with a low rim for whisker stress. I feed my guinea pigs from an au gratin dish because there are five of them and it's heavy and the rim is still low and they can't tip it.

I don't know where you're located but we recently bought two for the same reason you mentioned, i.e. back up in case one broke.  We found them at a chain store called Home Goods and they were very reasonable.  Depending where you live you can do a store locator for them, good luck! http://www.homegoods.com/tjx/locator.aspx

Walmart here has shallow oval cat dishes. So do all the pet stores. They're not hard to find nowadays.

Where do you think?
I'm cautious about ceramic dishes from places like that. Some of the cheap ones can have lead in the glaze or paint.

Just make sure it isn't made in China where they allow lead in paint.

You can either use wide shallow ceramic, porcelain or stainless steel bowls. Just like what lalagimp lalagimp mentioned, it reduces whiskers stress.

Do not use plastic as they are bacteria prone.

I use these for my boy when he eats, rectangular white or pink oval. The round dish is for his drinking but he seldom drink out of it because I add water to his wet food to get him more hydrated. His whiskers does not touch the edge of the round water bowl when he drinks from it as I fill the water all the way up to the rim. The cat face bowl is just to hold his spoon :lol3:

To be honest, I never knew about whisker stress until I joined this site.  Before then, I had just assumed that Buddy's preference for eating off a flat surface was yet another one of his strange quirks.

The flatness and weight of an au gratin dish sounds closest to what he's used to.  I'll give that a try first.  Thanks!

Might need to invest in an au gratin dish or two...

We also have sushi plates, they are long, relatively thin rectangles with slightly inclined sides.  Great for wet food.  Multiple cats--up to four adults--can eat from one plate, and on either side.

Cool!  There's one about an hour's drive from here...and it just happens to be across the street from a Cinnabon.

Thanks for the info.  I'll definitely give that a try!

Aw, those are so cute! *squees*

The last one is indeed closet to what I'm looking for.  In fact, it's the same color as the dish he's currently using!  Maybe the design won't freak him out now that he's gotten used to the idea of eating out of a dish.  Up until about six months ago, he'd only eat out of a spoon, the bathroom tile, or a piece of butcher paper.  I don't know where he gets these bizarre notions.

Thank you for the links!

I know what you mean.  The funny thing is that we actually bought that dish for another purpose.  Then one day an unexpected crisis popped up, and I grabbed the first thing that looked like a plate out of the pantry and dumped Buddy's food into it so I could run go take care of something.  And for Buddy, anything you do one time that he likes suddenly becomes a habit.

I don't have a kiln anymore, darn it, or I could make my own cat dishes as you suggested.  We had this silly idea that if we got rid of the kiln, we could pull another car into the garage.  Then Mr. Cheeser bought a bunch of woodworking equipment, which took up even more space that the kiln ever did.

I haven't tried an oval dish yet, only because Buddy does this weird thing where he likes to 'circle' his dish as he eats, and I thought the oval shape might throw him off since he's very much a creature of habit.

He's just going to have to learn some new habits.

My goodness!  I can't imagine any of our cats getting along well enough to share a plate!

Guess I'll give some other shapes a try besides the saucer like dish he's eating out of now.  Buddy might surprise me and be more amenable to the idea than I think.

I know what you mean about quirks. Kabby will take food out of his bowl and drop it on the floor and eat it off the floor. He does this even if I use a flat plate.

He has a large stainless dog dish which he prefers to the cat ones.
