Thank you so much.. So it is not caused because the mother cat is unable to feed her young. Not cause by n built up of milk. Milk will usually dry out on its own.. I gave her this information and she just told me that google is my tool and personale experience hers. I explained to her that this can even happen when the cat is still pregnant and that it has nothing to do with the kittens not drinking.. But still im the one thats wrong.. She has been teaching people wrong. I am glad i know more about this for a work with pregnant kittens and will know when this is happening.. Thank you for that article it really helped alot

I'm glad it helped! I always advise that people give their pregnant and nursing cats a dish of kitten formula (KMR) a day to help with their calcium needs.

We've had members on the forum whose cats are dizzy and stumbling and shaking after having kittens, and once they give them a dish of KMR they feel much better.

It's important that cats maintain their calcium level. The formula is good because it is balanced and provides other essential nutrients like potassium.

And yes, once kittens are weaned, mom's milk dries up. It takes about 2 weeks. It does not cause problems other than mom may feel uncomfortable the first 2-3 days if her glands are full.

Mastitis is separate from this. It is caused by bacterial infection in the milk ducts, is very painful, causes fever, and requires antibiotics to clear up.

Thank you.. I always give the pregnant cats i look after KMR and still give them a little when they nurse. Yes I know about Mastitis. Thats different.

She said that one of hers got Mastitis because the kitten was taken away to yearly.. Yet again that is wrong. It is caused by a bacterial infection. I told her Milk fever is not caused because the mothers glands are full of milk [emoji]128584[/emoji]..

A lady picked up new born kittens (Really cold and dirty outside) She is trying to trap the mother aswell to put them in a safe space and this lady told her to put the kittens back because the mother can get Milk fever if her kittens isnt drinking .. Like what.. The kittens can die outside.. The mother cat can now decide she doesnt want her kittens anymore or a dog can get ahold of them [emoji]128543[/emoji]. I tried to explain that that does not cause milk fever or Mastitis but then i get scold out for givving the wrong advise [emoji]128584[/emoji]. She claims shes been doing this for 8 years.. Ive only been fostering for one year and i still know whats the facts.. It just really sucks that shes been givving people the wrong advise and i wish i could help, but people are backing her up even the head of her fostering organisation says that milk fever is caused because of milk glands being full and thers no kitten to drink or because kittens are being taken away to early
