Hello eveyone!
Can anybody tell me: must I use raw chicken/turkey... liver to mix with Alnutrin or can I use Vit A as well?
I recently had to switch my 13 old cat back to canned + some dry food as he started having itching issues and kept vomiting the raw food + constipation so, as the vet and I are trying to find out if he has food intollerance/allergies, he's now on a Limited Ingredient Diet : I picked turkey but I still want him to have some raw turkey as well; I just order Alnutrin online and just realized the I will need to add liver. Don't think I can use chicken liver if my cat is on a one protein source diet.....can I?
Did anybody else use Vit A instead? If so, how do you calculate how much?
Thanks in advance?

I am really just bumping this up for you.  I've never heard of using Vitamin A as a substitute for liver, but maybe someone else has.  Why  not just use Turkey Liver?  Are you having a hard time sourcing it?

Hi, thanks for your reply. Catnutrition.org has a recipe where they suggest to use Vit. A and D only IF livers are not available, but only with caution and a short amount of time though...I know I can easily order turkey livers from HareToday...just wanted to make a small batch as my cat doesn't really like turkey but, again, we're trying to figure out if he has fodd allergy/intollerance. I've always use chicken liver from making raw meat batches and, because I still have a lot of it left at home, was trying a temporary alternative....doesn't look like local meet stores carrry turkey livers so, I'll have to place an order soon....

I would be uneasy about adding A & D supplements, versus using whole liver, but that's just me. I trust Dr. Pierson's nutrition advice. Vitamin A is cumulative (not water soluble) and too much can cause toxicity.

A deficiency in vitamin A can lead to serious conditions, notably conjunctivitis, cataracts, retinal degeneration and eventual blindness; vitamin A toxicity can lead to liver disease and debilitating arthritis, and the margin for error is generally accepted as being >25%.  A healthy adult cat requires 45 USP units of Vitamin A per pound of body weight daily, hence a ten pound cat would require .45 cc of Vitamin A per diem.  Guessing, or taking the word of someone on the internet whose credentials you cannot check puts your cat at risk, and supplementation of Vitamin A should be done only if your cat's Vitamin A levels are being scrupulously monitored by a pathologist.

No. I would not. You can find freeze dried turkey liver and use that in place of fresh. I personally wouldn't be too worried about dealing with a protein allergy though, more than likely you're dealing with an allergy to something in the commercial foods you're feeding, not a true protein allergy, which is pretty rare.
