Hello everyone,

Although I'm following this forum for a long time, this is my first topic here.

My 1,5 year old British shorthair male cat was sneezing approximately for 3 weeks. He has all the vaccines, he is perfectly healthy otherwise.

He's playing, running, energetic, eating and drinking perfectly normal.

We went to our vet, several times. He thinks he is allergic to something in the house, maybe to house mites. At night, our cat sleeps in bedroom, on the carpet or on our bed generally. And in the morning he sneezes 7-8 times consecutively, and then sometimes no other sneezing during the day, or sometimes 2-3 sneezing.

We do not use any household sprays, scented cleaners, perfume etc, we do not smoke, his litter is also unscented. We clean our house with hepa filter vacuum cleaner once a week, and change bedding once a week. We did not change anything in the house in 3 weeks, or we did not purchase any new furniture etc... I do not know what he may be allergic to and what can I do to make him more comfortable?

Does anyone experience this before? Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks.

Welcome to TCS!
Although I don't have any personal feline experience with your problem it would seem to me that if you had mites in your house your cat would show symptoms throughout the day and night as opposed to mostly in the morning.  Is your cat in your bedroom all day or only at night when you're sleeping?  Is it possible it's environmental, i.e. something outside that triggers it?  For example, I have allergies that are triggered certain times of the year and sneeze more frequently in the morning because the pollen count is highest at that time of day.  Perhaps other members can chime in with suggestions.

This is what I was thinking as well. I'm not sure where the OP is located, but Springtime has started where I am located!

Two things that can cause a lot of allergies are the birch trees starting to leaf out, and honeysuckle vines or shrubs starting to bloom. Even with windows cracked open just a little, dawn and dusk can cause allergy mayhem inside.

Thanks for the replies. If it was mites, than he would also sneeze during the day seems very logical :)

He was not always in our bedroom, but he spends most of his time in bedroom and also the night. Bedroom is his favourite place :)

Last night we started to give him antihistamine with the advise of our vet.

He did not sneeze this morning, he seems more comfortable.

I also think it might be seasonal because it started 3 weeks ago, when the spring starts. I hope his symptoms will lessen through the summer.

Maybe we will have to use antihistamines on mid-seasons.

We will use antihistamines for 1 week and then we will check again with our vet on weekend.

Update: Last week we decided to remove all the carpets in the house an give it a try for one week if his syptoms will improve or not.

After one-week trial without carpets, he was sometimes sneezing and coughing in the mornings, sometimes not.

So we decided to clean all the house in depth, we washed curtains, bed covers, cat beds, cushions, blankets.. eveything that can be washed in machine!

We clean all the surfaces, floors etc...

It was extremely tiring, but it worked! Since than our cat does not sneeze and/or cough. He seems more happy, so we do :)

I'm very happy to find a solution, although it will be very hard to keep the house spotlessly clean everytime, it seems that our cat is hyper sensitive to house dust.
