I just picked up my baby from her annual dental cleaning at PetSmart's Banfield Pet Hospital. This time, both of her front legs were shaved instead of just one and on both legs, the fur appears to be shaved a little too close to the skin. I can't tell if it's alright or not. Should I clean the areas with rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide?

Does it seem fine that they shaved both of her front legs this time or do you think they messed up? She also got some vaccinations, but I think the technician said one was on her shoulder.

I know PetSmart's probably not the best, but I like the annual Wellness plan with annual dental cleaning and 2 comprehensive exams so that I can check regularly on my cat's health. Her old vet seemed really great, but is no longer at the Banfield we go to.

On the plus side, my cat baby seems to recover well from anesthesia although I'm going to try to start brushing her teeth now to reduce the dental cleanings. *Fingers crossed*

My cats have only had one leg shaved when they had their dental so from my experience, it does seem unusual.  As to what it indicates, it's hard to know.  It may indicate a mess up but not necessarily. You're perfectly justified in calling the vet and asking why both legs were shaved.

As for the closeness of the shave - is the skin raw and bleeding?  If the skin is still intact, there isn't a need to clean it.  Whatever you do, please don't use rubbing alcohol on broken skin.  That stuff stings and burns like crazy.  Hydrogen peroxide is no better and might be even worse.  Short term use of Neosporin has been used on cats but there is a bit of a controversy about it so call your vet and confirm with them that it's okay to use.

Having said all of that, what great news that your kitty is doing well.
And good luck with the teeth brushing.

Thank you for your replies! I'm not happy with the way the shaved area looks and also not happy that they had to do both legs. Her previous dental cleanings with her previous Banfield vet went so well. Thanks very much for letting me know to not apply rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide. Her skin looks nicked, but neither area is bleeding, so I'll leave it alone. The nicks might be where they tried to get the IV in. My poor cat.

It's always such a loss when you lose a good vet and have to start second guessing the new one who is clearly not in the same league.   Is this vet the only one available at Banfield or do you have a choice?  Hopefully, you can find a better one.  That does seem like an unusually close shave for your kitty and wouldn't fill me with confidence either.

Thanks for your reply. Her old vet is still at a Banfield, but is now at the other location that is an hour away. The current Banfield vet is 1/2 that at 30 minutes away. Last year, I decided to stick with her old vet and brought my cat baby to the Banfield that was an hour away. My cat hates being outside or in her carrier, so this year I decided to try a new vet at the closer location. It seems like the extra 30 mins saved each way to make the trip shorter for my cat baby wasn't worth it although I don't know who shaved my cat baby and messed up the IV into her first shaved leg. Hopefully, I'll start brushing her teeth and she won't need to go every year for an annual cleaning.
