Ob's vet recommended that I raise his pred from 5 mg to 10 because he was regurgitating.    She said his GI tract was feeling "squishy" to her as well ( I really like this vet BTW, FYI, and so does Obi).  I asked her a bout backing him back to 5 after a bit and she agreed.  STill, I am uncomfortable with the 10 mg. dose.  I understand pred can cause pancreatitis (and he had a bout with this 3 years ago this summer).  I asked about bumping him up just to 7.5 (5 mg AM 2.5 PM) but she said cats do better with a uniform dose.  Does anyone have a solid opinion about this, and thoughts?  she is gone next week so I cannot re-visit the issue with her.

I would be reluctant to second guess your vet, especially since she knows Obi and his history.  I can understand why you are so concerned,  though - Obi has a history of pancreatitis and you definitely don't want to bring on another episode of that.  We do have to be our cat's advocates and speak up when we're concerned about the treatment our kitties are receiving.

Does your vet have anyone covering her practice while she is gone?  If so, you could try asking their advice.  Or you could go outside the practice altogether and get a second opinion.   I think you need some reassurance that keeping Obi on 10 mg for a week should not hurt him. At the same time, you need to find out what kind of symptoms to look for, if in fact it is too high a dose.

Hopefully, someone more experienced that I am with treating cats with prednisone can offer you some more concrete feedback.

I really trust the vet.  She is great.  I am thinking that I will raise his pred as she directed, and see how he does.  If he does not do well, I will call and back him down.  she is going to be out a week.  He has an appt with her a week from next Tues.  I will ask her then about backing him down.  I suppose a week at a higher dose of pred will not result in disaster.  I also have a cat sitter who is a vet tech in Oncology..I can ask her if I get stuck.  Thank you for your help.

pred was prescribed for our cat to treat pancreatitis and IBS.  pepcid and anti nausea meds did a better job of stopping HK's vomiting than the pred, though.

btw, HK is over 18, and he's been on pred for i think over 3 years.  in the long run, it may have caused some muscle wasting, but he has kidney disease, which also causes that.  our vet increased his dose for something, but after a while, i decided to cut his dose (the other issue was gone) and give him pepcid when queasy.

Obi is already on pepcid, ondansetron and pred.  His health is other wise good,  I am hoping that we can back him down after a short increase.
