Out of nowhere Scotty got a goopy eye (light coloured goop) and his eye sealed shut.  He had this last year around this time when we brought him in and it continued for most of the summer then cleared up on it's own.  It was good for 5-6 months then just reappeared.  It's only 1 eye, there's no physical trauma...  could it be allergies or a seasonal cold?

For the eye to produce enough discharge to actually seal his eye shut, I'm thinking infection but I could be wrong.  Either way, I think a visit to the vet should be in your future.

It's not a URI, that's a dark thick discharge from both eyes typically, this is a watery light yellow discharge mostly from a single eye and we know it'll clear up on it's own.  He had it 3-4 times last year - looks bad for a few weeks at most and then subsides...  it's just strange that it only occurs between late March and September/October

It doesn't have to be a URI to be a bacterial infection of the eye. With allergies they get alittle red and water some but they don't seal shut or produce runs of goop. That being said allergies do make you prone to infection so it could be that his eyes get irritated from the allergies and an opportunist bacteria makes itself at home in one of his eyes.

It ends up that it was pink eye (conjunctivitis) and healed up nicely on it's own, no antibiotics needed.  Just needed cleaning 2-3 times a day.
