I have a 13 year old maine coon who pretty much out of nowwhere was acting lethargic, drinking too much water, not eating much. This was on Sunday. I watched her like a hawk but by monday already had an appointment for her on Tuesday. Diagnosis is acute kidney failure. She's getting fluids at the vet now and was eating as of yesterday. However, her heart rate is low and she can't regulate her own body temperature. The vet thinks she also has partially lost her sight. I'm going to see how today goes. I'm having a very hard time accepting the fact that Kobie was "fine" in all appearances until she wasn't.

I held her for almost an hour this morning stroking her and telling her I loved her. She purred and cooed a tiny bit. If there's not improvement by tomorrow then I will make "the decision" but I'm sick over this and very heartbroken.

I'm so, so sorry.
We lost our 16 yr old Kippy to kidney failure in early December. We let nature take its course, and in one way it was good because I think he held on until our 21 yr old daughter could say goodbye, but if I had it to do over again I would've taken him in. My thoughts are with you.

Thanks.  Vet also thinks she's got possible cancer as one kidney is way huger than the other.  She also has potential heart disease.  She won't get up and use the box and has been just peeing while laying there. They can't bath her because she can't regulate her body temperature.

It's just breaking my heart that this happened so fast.  i'm just a wreck right now.

She was literally fine doing all the cute things that she does just a few days ago.  I need to stop googling because I also read that poisoning or the cat eating something it shouldn't can cause this also.  I have some "comfort" that the vet found other things besides just kidney failure so I'm trying not to think about this too much.

I'm very sorry for the loss of your kitty.

Here's a picture of Kobie.

Thank you.  I call her my pretty lady.

Doc just called, still can't get her to eat since last night.  She's such a love though and is digging all the brushing and is cooing quite a bit. Her heart rate is back up but her blood pressure is low which could be indicative of a heart problem. Doc is sending out  for the additional blood work which will be more telling now that she's hydrated and some things are more settled than yesterday. I'll have another visit with her in the am and by then she'll have the results back and we can know more about what we're dealing with.

I recently lost my kitty Omelette to cancer. Her story can be read here on over the Rainbow Bridge. She also was acting fine before she really was sick.Cats hide their feeling bad until it is very late for you to see it.I know how hard it is to make the decision to put her down.I took her home from the vet and watched her waste away.I could not put her to sleep.Like you it happened so suddenly.I was not ready to say goodbye. She tore my heart to pieces. We each have to make a decision that is right for us, and our beloved kitties.Give it some thought as to what you need to do. Don't rush into anything. Love Kobie all you can.Sending hugs to you both.

Hi and welcome to TCS.  You cat is gorgeous!

I also have a cat with kidney disease, although not acute.

My strongest suggestion right now would be two things. One, please, PLEASE look up Tanya's CRF website.  This site, is the bible of feline kidney disease

http://www.felinecrf.org/index.htm

Second, is if you're on Facebook please join this group:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/felinecrf/?fref=nf

It's the companion group to the website. I can't begin to tell you how valuable both of these have been to me in learning about the disease and how to manage it.  You'll be asked for the lab results on the Facebook group so that all their experts can assess what is happening to your baby.

Many vets jump to the conclusion that the cat won't be able to recover from an acute episode but that is not necessarily the case.  If nothing else, get the lab work and post it to the group and see what suggestions they have for you.

My sincere hope that your girl can continue to live a while longer, although it will be a learning curve in how to care for her.  It is NOT a death sentence and most cats live many years past their diagnosis with proper care.

Where do you think?
Ckd isn't necessarily a death sentence any more. Many medical advances have been made to aid both animals and people who have it. Ask about what medications and food you can give her to keep her comfy. If she's not eating ask about a appetite stimulant.

Kobie has been on antinausea and appetite stimulants since yesterday and the last time she ate was last night.   The staff is loving her up and she's getting lots of brushes and pets and has been cooing.  Other blood panel has been sent out and we'll have results by morning.  If she had just chronic kidney disease I wouldn't be as freaked.  Doc thinks she might have cancer on one of her kidneys and she might have heart disease.  Detailed Blood panel results will let us know more about what we are dealing with  I'll know by morning.

That's too many maybes. Don't jump the gun. Do fluids and supportive care and see if she can bounce back. Bouncing back may be slow but you are giving it a good shot. Post labs when you get them if possible.

Will do.  She's been on fluids since yesterday and while her heart is back up, her blood pressure is still low as is her body temperature. She's not getting up to use the box and is peeing on herself.  They can't bath her because of her body temperature.  As it is she hasn't eaten since last night.  I'll see how she's doing tomorrow.  If she has heart disease and other issues besides kidney failure I have to make a decision on what's best for her.  Hospitalizing her for several days is expensive and if she has a dozen issues going on I have to do what is best for her.  I'm hoping she eats by tomorrow.  I'll see what the blood results are and talk to the doc in the morning.
