WOW...with all of the upheaval yesterday (coming and going and inning and outing and running in circles and forgetting to eat), I ALMOST FORGOT!

I just bought a flat-pack daybed, and I have to put it together.  I did think to buy an electric drill/driver to get the job done, so I'm good.  DO you consider yourself a handy person, or do you yell for help when things are in pieces and need assembly or repair?

I consider myself a handy person and usually discover the hard way that I'm not.    Unless it's simply impossible (too heavy or needs more than 2 arms)  I'll keep struggling and growling at the project until it's basically complete.  The real trick is to learn how to not see the parts that are uneven or crooked and just enjoy the big picture.

Good luck with the day bed!

...with the cats...
i'm good at assembling things, even when instructions that are provided are (worse than) useless. also, there's no one here for me to yell for help to, so i'm used to getting the project completed myself.

there are some projects that are simply beyond my range of abilities, and i'm very good at being able to recognize those. for example, the furnace. i'll do what a repair person tells me to do while talking to me on the phone, but i'm well aware that messing around with something i don't know much about isn't a good idea -- that can cause more problems.

i do look into fixing things before deciding whether i'm able to handle them. many times i can deal with fixing them myself, but not always.

I'm pretty good.  I've changed light fixtures by myself and things like that.  My Grandpa used to have me help him do all kinds of things as a kid and it's been very useful.  DH and I enjoy doing projects together; whether it's just assembling something or something bigger around the house.

I used to be handy. I was the one who helped my dad the most with projects around the house. I even once, on my own, patched a ceiling hole in a rental I'd been in.  Lath and plaster job. Was not easy.

Now, not so much at all. I'm getting to old to take chances on ladders and don't have the inclination.  I call in help for everything possible.  Especially since Tom is no handy man either lol.

I do OK. I changed out the kitchen faucet, a bathroom faucet and the garbage disposal. I have also replaced the guts in a toilet tank. I have assembled/disassembled a day bed and I have put many pieces of furniture together including the cat trees and DD and my bed frames.

I think the only thing I would not attempt is anything electrical.

My husband and I are very handy, we have remodeled extensively over 20 homes and built a 5000 square foot lake house from the foundation on up. We do all the cement work, siding, windows plumbing. electrical, EVERYTHING ourselves. I get a little upset when I hear people say WE are building a house when in reality it is a contractor doing it. We learned it all ourselves too, from books and observing. I got many jobs at building centers where they actually had classes on building, soldering, plumbing, etc. and that is where I learned a lot. Nothing is impossible when you set your mind to it, and I love being able to hang a light fixture or wire a switch without waiting for my husband.

Yes, I'm pretty handy. I actually really like making things. My dad was a boat-builder and a carpenter at different times in his life, so he taught me a few things.

Well sort of. If it's something I have done before then yes. If it's a new item that I have no experience with then I get pretty flustered and swear and stomp my foot and hiss at it.

I know we can't know everything but I hate working on new things because then I have to listen to you know who say I should have/would have blah blah blah in my ear.  So if I can work on something without him involved it usually goes smoother.

My dad taught me lots of things to do when I was younger but he had a short fuse and if something wasn't going right he often got testy at it but for the most part he figured out how to do things on his own but the joke is don't let dad fix it or he will break it.

I tried to rebuild my own carburetor on my first car. It didn't go as well as I thought. But I learned how to assemble and figure out how things work. I would do it again as this time I know what I did wrong. At the time I was going to tech college and didn't have aton of money to spend on repairs..turned out it was the computer in the car.

I have not had to assemble much for toys/furniture but I could do it as long as I have enough room to spread out and enough light to see. I think if someone can help me show me how to do something I can pretty much figure it out. I work in the fabrication world of nuclear reactors and can say I have built a few parts on them so I have had some experience now putting things together and dealing with fitup and trying to solve a problem to get something to fit up and actually work correctly. I didn't know any of this stuff before I came here in 2003. So I definitely can find my way around assembly/motors/engines etc. if it's got wheels I can figure it out is the joke.

Would you like to take a vacation and come to my house?

I am handy at certain things, learned from my dad.  Unfortunately my husband has no patience.  I remember when we were removing wallpaper and he got so frustrated because the former owner had papered over paper that he tore off the top layer of drywall with it.

Nobody in my family is handy.  Except me.  I used to repair electronics and I had a business that did it.  I prefer to repair things myself.  I put a barbecue grill together for my cousin and he was very grateful, but I think he thought such knowledge was beneath him.
  He was a politician.

I don't do as much now, but at the rescue where I volunteer, there is almost no one who is handy.  When they need something done, I am usually the one who gets the job.

Oh my, I think we are married to the same guy. I feel the same way you do. When I have something to put together or a project I try to do it when he is out of town.I am handy with some things but, not others.,they have classes at the home depot in the summer and I always mean to take one but, never have. I have 4 brothers so my dad had his handymen and never taught me that stuff.

LOL...I was married to him before you guys!  And the worst of it was, he would get disgusted trying to put something together, stomp off pouting, then criticize me  when I took over to get the job done...ONE WAY OR ANOTHER!  One of the many reasons I now live with my cat.  She judges, but not aloud.
