Hey gang!

Skye's initial bloodwork came back---my vet called me Weds evening and I was working, so I couldn't really ask too many questions:

Her kidney values are the same as December---high end of normal, which at 17, I'd expect. Her pancreatic levels were down from 44 to 16!!!!! (She showed zero signs of pancreatitis though). All other levels normal. She was hydrated, and was a happy kitty.

Now, she's arthritic and a 'big kitty'. 17.15pds. I've had her on prednisone for arthritis and pancreatitis needs, but my vet called me Saturday afternoon wanting to test Skye's urine--something about protein loss.

Now, I've been watching Skye's hind end weaken and give her size, she's really tired. I am weaning her off of prednisone because I am almost certain this is the cause. I can't just stop her since she's been on 1 daily since December. I'd upped it to 2 daily --the plan was for 7 days to see if it helped her arthritis, but I saw no results and had actually forgotten to give her some---and my gut was telling me to drop the pred.

I got sick with the flu on Saturday and was bed ridden Sunday. But something was happening with Skye--she was hanging her head in her water dish and gulping water. She'd doze off, then gulp more---I've never seen any cat do this. I ended up getting her fluids at the emerg vet clinic and an Xray of her stomach as I'd been worried about her lack of poop. All looks good--air in there, and some question as to whether one part was fat or fluid. Her belly is big, but it's ...well, chubby. And the emerg vet said that would be indicitive of liver issues, which was not seen on blood work.

Have any of you had a cat that drank like that? have any of you had a cat on long term prednisone that developed muscle wastage? What did you do?

She's back to the vet tomorrow for urine test and I want her potassium checked. They checked her blood glucose and all was fine. But I am also wondering about her thyroid. My first kitty had KD, and she was diagnosed very late (it was 1999). She never showed any of these signs--other than vomiting and dehydration/constipation. Skye has NOT thrown up---just once after I gave her a bit of peanut butter ;) Won't be doing that again..

I also wonder if I gave her too much pain meds yesterday. She was so tired and lethargic, but last night, after a good sleep, she went to my porch and slept in her box out there--very happily. If she's not well, she stays close to me.

Peeing is fine/normal. I'm just hoping she can strengthen her hind end and develop more muscle after I get her off prednisone....since we are going into the summer months, her joints should feel better. :)

Sounds like your Vet is checking her for Proteinurea, which can cause loss of appetite, weakness, increased water consumption (also signs of kidney disease, but since she doesn't have then, then she could have proteinurea.   You mentioned her tummy is "big"   Is that new?  That's also a sign of Proteinurea, as they can develop edema (water retention)  They can also develop that in their extremities.

There are a few issues that can cause cats to drink excessively.  Diabetes, thyroid issues and kidney disease comes to mind.  I'm guessing her blood tests cleared ALL of those?
