Hello, my here is the scoop. I am so torn
Last July my cat was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism and underwent the radiation treatment and stay in the hospital for 3 days.
She was retested blood samples 2 times over the following months as they do with that and all looked great!
Then on christmas eve, she was vomiting so bad at that point and her behavior had been odd(worried about hearing loss and demenia) since the treatment took her back in reran blood to find Kidney disease.
I put her on the same regiment and my miss mittens which is K/d diet food and aluminum hydroxide the powder 1/4 tsp to a can a day-she eats 2-3 cans(small) a day. The vomiting continued. They put her on the Furmoside(antacid) which helped for a while.
Due to my other cats health issues because I care I just wanted to check and took her to the cardiologist because we knew she had a murmur that was also sounding worse. Cardio said yes, SHE HAS MILD HEART DISEASE BUT MILD NOT LIKE MITTENS
then, wanted to go to internist to get an ultrasound after that echo, to give any more info on the kidney disease beyond what the local vet can do. the kidney values are under control except for one. but then THEY FOUND THE THICKEND WALLS OF THE GI TRACK. AND SAID VERY THICK NOT A LITTLE A LOT. WE THINK CANCER, YES COULD BE IBD, BUT WE THINK NEED TO GO AHEAD AND DO FULL SURGERY NOT LAPAROSCOPIC BECAUSE YOU SPENT $2K AND INCONCLUSIVE SO WE NEED TO DO THE SURGERY AND SEE WHAT IT IS BECAUSE IF CANCER THAT'S THE ONLY WAY TO TREAT IT. OTHERWISE WITHOUT THE DIAGNOSIS WE WON'T BE ABLE TO TO TREAT IT.
AND IF YOU PUT ON THE STEROIDS WHICH I DID FOR ABOUT A WEEK OR 10 DAYS BECAUSE MY REGULAR VET TOLD ME TO, THEN THAT WILL SKEW RESULTS OF BIOPSY. SO I DISCONTINUED THE STEROIDS, WHICH SHE HAD STOPPED VOMITING THAT WEEK WHILE SHE WAS ON THEM.
In that time my 2 regular vets said they would just put her on the steroids and move forward and not do surgery. The surgeon said you have already waited to long we need to get her in asap and get this done because then we'll have to wait another 2 weeks after recovery to begin chemo if she needs that. They told me chemo would be about every 3 weeks the first 3 months it would cost 5-600 a month then it would be $75 after that.
She is 14 years old going on 15 we have to guess her age. She weighs 6.2 lbs now as she lost all that weight--I thought because of the hyperthyroid then I thought because of kidney now I think because of all of this. She's always been small but now she's way too small. Given that she has mild heart disease and kidney disease and they will give her the Michael Jackson drug and fentenal and I think one more to have her in surgery which costs $2k(I don't care about the money I'm selling many personal belongings to do it I really don't care! ) I just want to make sure I'm doing right by her and that she won't die on the table. I asked the odds of complications and the surgeon said maybe 1 in 20 cats that doesn't sound great. Please please I read some other threads but I am asking about my specific situation because I don't have all these vets on the same page advising me the same way. I have half of them telling me don't do it and the other half saying we need to do it.
I booked an appt at NC state because they are great but can't see her until april 10.
Give all this info and the fact that I feel some of the doctors are saying don't do it and roll the dice because you won't get that much time anyway if you treat her with chemo and it's so costly and then others are saying we must do this a risky surgery in order to know what were dealing with to know treatment options? PLEASE HELP ANY WORDS OF ADVICE OR EXPERIENCE ARE APPRECIATED. I AM PLANNING TO MOVE FORWARD WITH SURGERY BIOPSY NOW ALTERING GOING BACK AND FORTH.
THANK YOU.
