My cat had kittens a few weeks back and I have recently noticed she avoids feeding them to the point of running out of the room if they are in there too. They are still smallish, barely have opened their eyes a week ago and are attempting to walk. Her nipples are very red and sore plus scratched and looks really uncomfortable when feeding I got ahold of a clipper for the kits today but is there anything I can rub on her nips and breasts to ease her discomfort?

Mom sounds in a great deal of pain. It sounds as though she may have mastitis. This is an infection of the mammary glands that requires antibiotics to cure. Can you get her to the vet?

In the meantime, apply a warm, damp compress to her nipples, then apply olive or coconut oil or bag balm several times a day.

If she is unable to feed her kittens, you'll need to supplement them yourself with kitten formula and a syringe every 2 hours. Please weigh the kittens so we know if they are gaining. They need to gain 6-10 grams each per day. How old are they exactly? Do they have teeth yet?

I see...they don't have teeth yet but they feel like they're coming in. They are 3 weeks and a few days old. I'm a student so it might be difficult to get some vet help do you have any idea as to how much would the cost amount to in general?

Vet costs vary by location. Call a couple of vet offices and ask about their fees. See if you can locate one with lower fees. Ask about a student discount.

Keep us posted on how mom is doing. Have you tried the compress and oil yet?

Where are you located? Maybe we can help to find a clinic. Will you have her spayed after this litter?

She has been doing a lot better since I've began the compresses! Her breasts are now a healthy pink and looking fuller. She's not avoiding the kittens anymore and goes into the room herself. As to spaying I am afraid the clinics in my area are notorious for performing exceptionally bad on cats and caused the death of a friends cat the year before in the worst spaying I have ever seen. I've been trying to get someone to take her to mexico for me (not that far from here) where the service is less expensive and better

Good to hear that her mammary glands are feeling better. Continue with the compresses and oil for now.

Where do you live that vet care is so poor?

Laredo, Texas some are down right terrible and the others overcharge for it even though she's pretty light weight
