I just inherited my Dad's cat. When dad passed no one else wanted him. He is about 7 years old and dad never took him tot he vet I am sure. I took him for a check up and has two maybe 3 teeth that need pulling. He started him on antibiotics and pain meds first. But, still has issues with eating dry food. He also does not like ANY wet foods. I tried adding those broths and he doesn't like it either. I did add warm water to dry food and he did was drink the water. I did find he would eat shredded boiled chicken. Also, I bought some some cat ensure for senior cats. It is like a meal replacement. Makes me happy he is filling his belly with something.

I didn't see if anyone suggested putting water in the dry food. I have a cat that won't eat wet food, but I just started adding water to his dry and he LOVES it. Brings out the smells more and definitely makes it softer. Amazing what I learned when I finally read the entirety of the back of the bag :p
Good luck. I hope his appetite improves!

If he will eat shredded boiled chicken, why not feed him a home cooked diet? Boiled chicken on its own is not a complete diet so you must add in supplements. The easiest way to do this is to use a pre-mix such as EZComplete. It doesn't take long to make a batch of food using a pre-mix, maybe 15 minutes or so. You can portion the food out into meal portins or daily portions and freeze. The Raw and Home Cooked Diet forum has more info on how to make a complete balanced diet and, if you live in a country where a pre-mix is not sold (most are US and Canada), how to make a diet with individual supplements.

Soaking dry food in water is fine if your cat will eat the mixture up right away. I wouldn't leave the bowl of soggy kibble out all day because bacteria can grow in it.

Freeze dried raw might be an option. The texture is soften than regular dry food and you can soften it up even more by adding water to it. Stella and Chewy's, Nature's Variety Instinct Raw Market, and Feline Naturals are some bands that are complete diets. You won't find these in chain pet stores, though. You'll have to find an indepdent pet store for raw foods or buy online.
