Hi, I have a very serious question....my cat is 1yr old I took her to the vet a few weeks ago bc I thought she was pregnant. They said they couldn't feel anything....then tonight she had SEVEN babies!! Is this bad? It seems like a lot of kitties for a first time mom...what should I look out for? She seems content and relaxed now and let's me pet her babies and herself....I guess I'm just worried about the number she had and if she can handle them. I've fostered kittens from 1 week old in the past and she happens to be one of those kittens. So I'm able to care for them but will she be able to with that many kittens??

Not yet it was 9pm here when she had them so I haven't had a chance to get to the store but i plan to go tomorrow and get a scale and a baby gate for my bedroom where she chose to have them

I'm worried about the number of nipples she has I haven't checked if she has 6 or 8 nipples I know it varies. I'm worried she won't be able to care for them all and while I've fostered I've never experienced having a mamma cat and kittens

You will likely need to rotate them.  You'll know more once you weigh them.

How often do I rotate?

Every two hours or so.  You'll want to divide them into groups of smallest and largest, 3 and 4 or 4 and 3.  You will need a heat source, like a heating pad on low, for the nest that doesn't have mom in it.

Oh wow every two hours or so is a lot. I haven't done that in a year but I was bottle feeding kittens then. Would they benefit from supplement milk or would that make them stray from mom's nipple?

Hello! I had a momma with 8 babies a while back! Weighing and rotating and supplementing is key because the bigger, stronger ones will fight the little ones off of the nipples! You will weigh them to figure out what groups you need. Then rotate them every two hours- four biggest ones with momma while you feed the three smallest. Then in two hours the three smallest can go back with momma for feeding/stimulating and you will supplement the others!

You can, but she may try to move them back. I don't recommend moving them right away though. Cats love closets because they are dark and private.

Can you make an accommodation in your closet for her? They will come out in 3 weeks and stay out.

Have you begun weighing, rotating, and supplementing yet?

The thing with this closet is it is collapsible, I have five kids and needed another closet. I've not started weighing and supplementing yet but I'm about to go to the store to get my stuff I need I read wet food is best for moms so I'll get some of that too. There was only 6 when I woke up today could she have eaten one??

Oh dear! Have you looked all over for it? She may have put it somewhere. Doubtful she ate it if she ate 7 placentas.

Please look everywhere for the seventh one, it may have crawled off or she may have carried it somewhere, ready to move others too, so watch her.Make sure the kids didn't take one.  My little female had seven kittens too before I had her spayed, she needed no help though and all turned out well. Good luck!
