My 10 year old kitty got really sick and was in ICU for 3 days. Now he won't eat. He acts like he wants to but then will sniff food and walk away or only take a few links. We are syringe feeding 35 ml 2 to 3 times a day. He is on a probiotic recommended by holistic vet. We stopped mertazipine, odancetron, and cypfro as recommended by both traditional and holistic vet as not doing anything. My husband and I are really afraid we're going to lose our baby. How long can it take before they start eating again? I don't want to give up on him if there is hope.

I'm so sorry your little fellow isn't feeling well.

I had to syringe my boy last year when he developed mouth cancer.  One thing that helped me was using a small syringe, I did use a knife to widen the whole slightly but I used the 5.0 that came with his meds.

I also took his food, a can of Royal Canin or Iams recovery, put it in a deep bowl, added a half can of really hot water to it and used my hand blender to make it really smooth so all the fats were broken down, it was like a cream soup.

When he lost interest, I added Gerber baby food to it.  Chicken, ham, beef, turkey. etc.

Don't lose hope.  He'll turn around.  Patience is needed no doubt, but hang in there.

Best to you.

I'm sure other members will chime in with great advice and tips for you also.

So the holistic vet recommended a probiotic and took him off all meds? Have you had labs drawn? Surely they did when he was in the ICU? They gave you no indication of what is going on?
