Hi everyone,

I'm in need of some information to help my kitty, Geno.

In January he had a major crystal blockage (3rd time) and the vet opted to perform a perineal urethostomy. Since then he's been having a lot of UTI problems and we have been experimenting on what foods are best for him (that he will actually eat.)

My question, though, is if anyone knows of any home medication I can give him for pain untill I can take him to the vet tomorrow. I live in a very small town and there are no vets open on Sunday and the nearest emergency vet is over an hour and a half away (and me with no legal working car or money to pay them) and wont help me over the phone. At the moment he's laying down in the squatting position so I'm very concerned. He has defecated (today's was runny while last night's was firm) and dribbles urine (turning brown so I know he has an infection starting.)

Also, I've been told cats that have had PU surgeries can't be blocked again, but I still have that fear every time he acts this way. I've found little information on the actual success rates but was wondering if anyone else's cats who have had this surgery have had to remit their cat for blockages.

Thanks in advance.

I can't help with home pain medication.  I always keep some buprenorphine from the vet in case of emergencies.

If his pain is caused by crystals in the bladder and urethra, secondray to diet that has allowed his urine pH to become 7.0 or more, you can dissolve them using a solution of 4 parts water to 1 part Bragg's organic unfiltered apple cider vinegar, give him 1 cc. by mouth every half hour for awhile, and you can also try to get him to drink more by offering him tuna juice mixed in with water.  Even if his pain is not related to crystals, this will not hurt him.  It's very healthy in general.

As for diet, most vets rely on the prescription food because it's easy and it's what they have been taught by the manufacturing reps, but you can usually do much better by creating our own high protein, moderate fat and low carbohydrate diet.  See some of these other ongoing links for suggestions and deetails.

Thank you for the links. I'll read through them today and hopefully the will help manage his problem.

I gave him the last of the buprenorphine I had from the last infection, but I think it was under a dose. Hopefully that little bit will help. I gave him a massage and he started pouring, so it's good to know he isn't blocked. These situations are just so frustrating.
