Hi there, need some input from those more experienced.

Due to an increased cat population in my neighborhood, I had been trapping cats, bringing them to a local organization that spays/neuters cats in traps for $10.  Well, one little sweety made it in the trap and I had a feeling she was pregnant.  She has been in the house for about 6 weeks and is very pregnant.

She has long hair and the first few weeks never noticed any fleas.  After using a comb on her, I realized she did have fleas.  I went to Walmart that night (March 6), bought Hartz Ultra Guard Pro topical treatment for cats.  After applying it, she appeared to be a little distressed and panting, but that passed.  Further combings didn't yield fleas.

Saturday March 11, she did go outside and then didn't come back.  She spent the night outside.  Since returning, she has many fleas.  My daughter combs her daily and probably gets 20 fleas off of her.  We do not notice any in the house, but I realize they could be here.

Okay, so my question is whether getting a higher quality treatment and applying it would be okay?  I don't want her to have a reaction, but at the same time I do not want her giving birth full of fleas.  We did get her in the tub the other night and bathed her with dawn, but that did not appear to help.  I do not trust the Hartz brand after how she responded.

Any input is appreciated!!  I suspect she will be giving birth within a week or two.  For 4 or 5 days now I can feel the babies moving like crazy.  They can also be seen moving just looking at her belly.

Please do NOT use any Hartz products ever again. Their flea medicine needs to be removed from the market. It creates horrible side effects in cats. Sorry you discovered the hard way, and lucky it wasn't worse.

I recommend Advantage II for cats. It is safe for pregnant cats and highly effective. She may need a dose a couple weeks apart. Sounds like she is infested.

You'll want to wash any bedding she uses in hot water, and vacuum floors to pick up eggs and larvae.

Good to get rid of the fleas now because they will get on the kittens and can cause flea anemia.

Please keep her in 100% now so she does not have her kittens outside.

Thanks for helping all the cats! [emoji]128522[/emoji]

Excellent. Thank you so much. I have the Advantage II in hand, waiting to check out. If she were to react, do you think this would be immediately or within the hour? Just curious how long I should watch her before going to bed?

How did she do? I've used it for years and never seen a single reaction in any of my cats.

She did great.  If she were to have had a reaction, I think it was that she didn't sleep as much as normal.  I finally went to sleep around 2am and she stayed awake the whole time.  Thank you so much for the advice and input.  I had been mulling over whether or not I could get one of the high end brands and safely give it to her, for days now.

She may have felt fleas moving around and dying on her that kept her awake. Brush her and check for fleas in a day or two. She may need another dose in 2 weeks, then once a month until fleas are completely gone.

I'm pleased this is working out for you! [emoji]128522[/emoji]
