I got my cat fixed as suggested. He's been doing very well, but still exceptionally playful. Much more loving and willing to snuggle up st times but also still not a lap cat in general.

However we still have stray cats around here and this morning there was one really close to the house and he sensed it. Earlier today he went outside and when we called him he wouldn't come back in. It looked as though he was sniffing where the cat was. He didn't run away. But I'm still concerned. Should I be worried? I'm afraid he may start being territorial again, spraying and howling and showing aggression. Also scared he may come out and never come back. What should I do?

A start is if you can use motion detecting spray nozzles for the garden hose. Neighbor cats would spray our front door, so Stewy would spray too.
The mail lady liked this idea because we lived in Phoenix and she was hot.

Congrats on the neutering. I'm glad that it is helping.  You should remember that it can take a couple of months for all the hormones to finally leave your cat, so he may still have a bit of the old behaviors till then.

This is hilarious

Some cats are extremely nervous about other cats in their territory even if they are spayed or neutered. How is he now, were there signs of stress? Just keep an eye on him and see how he goes. If he starts to behave like he is stressed you need to scare the outside cats away.

He's still very stressed, trying to get out the door every chance he gets. He seems not like himself. When he goes outside he sniffs around in the same spot, so I'm starting to think the other cat may sprayed there. What are my options at this point

He's acting very strange now, he keeps running away from me and he tried to escape again outside. I'm afraid one day he may run away and not come back. I don't know what's wrong :(

Csts are territorial, having other cats spraying his territory and not being able to scare them off is stressing him

It depends how technological ypu want to get. Chasing the cats away when you see them, lemon juice and vinegar in a spray bottle sprayed in places they've sprayed, gadgets that detect motion... Feliway or calming chews for your kitty

Update:
The situation hasn't gotten any better. My cat wants nothing to do with me almost. His meows are different. No hissing or growling but he won't let me pet him. He isn't following me around anymore or being loving like he used to. I'm afraid I've done something wrong :(

Your cat is stressed. Look at it from his perspective, He's just been neutered so his body has not had time to flush the male hormones. There are cats in his territory and he can't scare them away. He's stressed and frustrated.

Nothing is working? You could try something which may help to calm him down ie feliway, calming chews, rescue remedy but you really need to assure him that your yard is his territory. If you have a high fence around your yard you could try placing a wired cat fence on top of it, they angle in so that cats don't feel comfortable coming in and they keep your cat in. . .

This is a bit of an expensive option but it worked for me with my cat's aggression. Feliway room plug-ins. Get one for EVERY room. You'll need to try this out for at least 1.5 months, maybe a little longer to notice results. When one runs dry, immediatelyreplace it. Do not leave them plugged in dry as this could cause a fire. I check mine once a week. You'll notice some dry out faster than others. You can get a six-pack of refills from Amazon for a really good price. Worked wonders for me.

I bought feliway as suggested.
An update is to say that his behavior isn't really improving. In the mornings is when he's most disobedient and he's trying to get farther and farther away when he gets outside.im trying all the suggestions made here so that we don't lose him. It's very hard to play with him now because after 5 minutes or so of playing correctly with him he will start panting and running everywhere at a 100 miles an hour. I just hope it gets better soon.
When we first brought him home from being neutered he did not have this problem. Now he seems to always be on edge

Poor little thing, he really sounds distressed. How is it going trying to keep the cats away?

There is a discussion on another thread here where people are listing ways to keep ferals away but you may need to keep him inside if you use some of these methods.

Update:
He seems to be doing a lot better. He still bolts for the door but not as frequently. He's still acting crazily when at the height of his hyperness, but he settles down much sooner. There are a total of three stray cats that he has already interacted with as far as we know so obtaining feliway was the best option. I really thank you all for the continued support With me and my cat! I love it here on this site, you all are very helpful.
I'm still considering adopting a new cat friend for him and possibly changing my work schedule so that I'm home at night to tend to him so he won't have to be kept in the room Alone. I think that's adding to his stress as well.
