Hello - I am new here and I am sure there is a lot on this topic so please forgive me.

I have a 5 year old calico girl who came up my driveway about 6 years ago and has been my best friend ever since. She is generally good health and is an indoor/outdoor cat since I live on a farm. She sleeps with me every night. Her name is also Gabbee.

Gabbee has never really had a flea problem. But her vet a few years ago suggested Revolution. However Gabbee went completely frantic for a day after I put it on her so I never did that again. I always check her for fleas and have never seen any. I also have 2 male cats that also came up the driveway a few years ago and they have never had fleas.

A few months ago Gabbee started really licking her backside above her tail and had worn off some hair. I took her to the vet last week and she said that Gabbee has a flea allergy which is uncommon. The vet said that a flea probably bit her a few months ago and Gabbee developed an allergic reaction which is why she keeps licking her backside. The vet checked her for fleas and there were none.

So the vet wanted to give Gabbee Revolution again but I declined. So now she gave me Comfortis but I have read that there can be terrible side effects.

The vet also wants to give the other 2 cats flea medication in case one might hop over to Gabbee though all the cats are flea free right now. I live in a northern climate.

Can anyone suggest anything for Gabbee? I don't want to give her toxic drugs. Can anyone suggest anything to get her to stop licking her backside and removing more hair?

Thank you very much for your help.

Yes, some cats are allergic to flea saliva. We use nothing but Revolution. We love it.

I have to ask you if you have had the cats fixed?
