Two nights ago, I heard an animal crying between 1130pm-1am.  It almost sounded like the animal was running past the front of the house because it trailed off.  I looked outside but didn't see anything.  Yesterday, I saw paw prints in the snow. I have a shelter outside and I have dry food because wet will freeze.

Last night, my mother said she heard something crying, briefly.  There were more paw prints today.  It looks like some of the food was eaten but I have no idea what might have eaten it.  It has been EXTREMELY COLD and windy. I'm very worried about a cat or any animal, being outside.  I bought a trail cam and I'm putting it outside tonight.  Hopefully, it will function properly.  I've included pics of the paw prints.  If you think it is a cat, is there anything that I can or should do that I'm not already doing?

Is the shelter used by another cat?  If so, you might want to put another one out there, so the newcomers isn't invading anyone's territory.

Putting food out is a good idea but I would watch it closely to make sure other critters (raccoons or possums) aren't eating it.

Thank you for helping this little one.  I hope the trail camera works so you'll know for sure who it is.

The cry we heard definitely wasn't a bear. The prints are actually pretty small.

It's definitely a cat.  I was finally able to capture it on my trail cam, after several adjustments. Two nights ago, my male was pawing at the window.  He must have seen it outside. The way the lenses on my trail cam are situated, I have to try turning it on its side in order to get a full view and to determine whether it's using the shelter and/or eating the food I set out every night.  It must have been the animal that was crying that frigid snowy night.

I also cannot get a good color photo to tell if it's male or female.

I have a trap but once I trap it and get it fixed, then what? If it's not feral, do I just release it back into the elements?  I can't bring it inside with my two cats.

If you can, work with a rescue to determine if its adoptable or feral.  They may be able to help you find a home for it.

If it is feral, can you keep a shelter for it outside and continue to feed it?

Either way, if you trap it and have it fixed, you'll be doing a wonderful thing for this kitty..

Where do you think?
If its still snowy like that is there an animal shelter near you? Cats oand snow don't mix. The cold will give them frostbite. Cats can lose body parts from this the ears tail and nose are most vulnerable. If you don't have an animal shelter nearby maybe set up a shed on your property and set up a heated water dish and food bowl. If possable place a ceramic heater in the shed as well.

There is no more snow. The no-kills and the rescues are not taking cats. I've tried several across three states, within two hours driving distance. I have food and water out and I have an insulated shelter that I made I saw it tonight. It's an orange cat. I don't know if it's male or female. However, I do lnow that there were a couple of strays in my neighborhood previously but there are also people in thebarea who let their cats out. None of thr neighbors are really friendly enough to ask though.

You've gotten off to a good start helping.  I am not surprised that the shelters are full - kitten season is coming up and it will only get worse.

Please see if you can find a rescue to help you trap and fix this kitty.  Providing it with food is a wonderful thing but if it isn't fixed, your yard will soon be full of cats.

good luck and blessings on you for helping this kitty!
