Hey

I am new to cats so I am not really sure about this one

I am taking care of an outdoor cat,  she poops in the garden. Is it normal if a cat smells after she poops ? The smell goes away after 30 minutes to 1 hour. But it is bad right after she poops.

Is it normal ? If yes, is it caused by her grooming her butt then grooming herself ?

Hello Rob19, is the smell there each time after she poop? Or did she like step on the poop or is the poop soft and got messed up on her legs? Or is there poop stuck on her bum as like left over around the anus or stuck on her for if she's a long haired cat?

Sorry that I asked so many questions. If it is non of the above, smell is most likely from her anal gland. The smell will go away in awhile's time. It's normal.

I don't think the smell is there every time she poops, but I am not sure tbh.  I can't see anything stuck .

Could be the anal gland. Sometimes when they have hard poo, the poo will press against the anal sac and they kind of empty the sac and thus the smell. They might spray the fluid if they are exited or scared. It's just a pungent smell.
Do you see her biting her tail or scooting on the ground? They do this is because they wanna catch the itch and its uncomfortable for them. Or any swell around the anus?

This is my guess, I might be wrong but if you are worried, bring her to the vet. They can have her checked and if it's the anal gland, they can express it for her.
