Hi, My boyfriend recently adopted a abandoned cat who's quite shy. We have noticed a black mark on his left eye and we're not sure if it's affecting his sight or simply a defect. With him being a shy cat we don't want to distress him with a trip to the vets unless it's necessary Any advice would be great, thanks. Amanda .

I would make the appointment, unless you have one scheduled in the next few weeks for vaccines or neutering or something. It is better to have the vet check it to make sure it isn't something serious.

I am fairly certain it is an eye freckle but a vet really needs to make the call on that and take photos for comparison with a recheck after a few months to make sure it isn't growing. They can be completely harmless (assuming they don't change). They can be signs of cancer which grow and increase pressure on the eye so you do want to get it checked. Really not trying to scare you. It is probably nothing but there is a small chance that it is a sign of something but so it every unidentified lump or bump so please don't freak out by a small possibility. Think moles on people as a comparison; they usually are nothing but you still point them out to the doctor and take photos to compare over time.

Assuming that it doesn't grow, the eye doesn't appear lumpy, it isn't red and it isn't cloudy you can give it a little while if you want more time since the last vet appointment or have an upcoming appointment. I do totally understand how stressful it can be for everyone to visit the vet. I was taking Link in once every two weeks for almost four months; he still cries all the way there and all the way home but he has really come to love his vet. Rocket on the other hand is a quivering mess and somehow scrunches herself into a teeny tiny ball at her visits. I feel so bad for her but I know, in the end, it is much better for her to get the proper treatment in a timely manner.

Thank you for the reply, yes we will get him checked over asap. I haven't noticed it getting any bigger so hopefully it's all ok. Thanks again for the advice. Amanda
