I recently moved into a new neighborhood and a cat has been following me. She doesn't have a collar, so I don't know if she's a stray or somebody's outdoor pet. Problem is, this cat enters my house uninvited. Don't get me wrong, I like cats just fine, but I can't have one around because my husband is allergic. This cat waits by my car and wiggles her way into the house as soon as I open the front door.I have never offered food but I do let her hang out for a belly rub every now and then. It's always a struggle to get her to leave. She jumps out of my arms and runs upstairs when I try to carry her out. She seems perfectly healthy and walks with her tail up, purring loudly. I don't have it in my heart to yell and scare her but for my husband's sake I need her to stay out. Please help!

Can you ask a neighbor if she was a pet of the old owner? It sounds like she is perfectly at home in your house which would make sense if they moved out and left her behind.

That aside, I would put a collar (breakaway for safety) on her with a note asking where she belongs. That way you can find out if she has a home. If you don't get a response within a week or two then change the note to say that you are turning her over to a rescue if there is no response in a week. Then call the local rescue, explain the situation, and find out what their relinquishment requirements are. Around here it is a fee and a meeting to make sure the cat is social enough for adoption. If you go this route please don't send her to a kill shelter.

Definitely a cat left behind when the previous owner of your home left. Is there any way you can contact the previous owner? In some cases, the cat escapes & runs back to where they lived before & the owner is then looking for them.
