I'm sorry to hear about your kitties. In the past, I lived in the city, and my cats were indoor/outdoor. I moved to a townhouse in a burb when my kids left, and at that point my cats became indoor. Between the coyotes and the raptors (I've had friends who lost pets to both owls and eagles; one was being walked on a leash, the other was in a fenced yard) outdoors can be very dangerous! So far my horse is okay, although my son's was attacked once by an inexperienced young cougar who I'm certain now knows better! He's in a rural area though, and his cats are indoors, fortunately. It's so hard to keep kitties safe if they go outside!

Could you elaborate on how a pet got lost on a leash. I'm planning on training my next cats to walk on a leash. Maybe I should rethink that!...lol

She had a lose hold on the leash, her small dog was behaving. She never heard the owl swoop down from behind, she never saw it coming. It was so sad. There was nothing she could do. It made me rethink how I hold a leash!

I don't even know how to respond to that. That would be devastating. The whole thought process involved with that. Must of been a huge owl. We have owls here but I don't think they're big enough to do that.

It was a large owl. Her dog was small, but the size of most cats... a terrier, I think. It may not have survived the struggle even if she had a firmer grip, their talons are so sharp and strong. But she'll never know. Yes, devastating describes it. I am still going to get Caoimhe used to a leash... but I think I'll avoid walking her after dark. And I'm going to make sure the leash is wrapped around my wrist.

Yeah, be careful with her. It's got me thinking though. I lost another cat back around Nov. She was an outside cat and small. She was a stray I took in when she was about 8 or 10 weeks old. She just basically lived here and I fed her. She never was a loving social cat. You could pet her but you had to be careful how or she would take a swipe at you. She was 14 or 15. She insisted on being out side. I remember an owl hanging around but don't remember if it was the same time line. Just makes me wonder.

Yes, I will be careful. In my neighborhood I often hear an owl and coyotes (pretty much every night), and I've occasionally seen an eagle circling, so I know they're all nearby. I've only lost one cat to an animal, and that was a rottweiler the owners let run loose after dark. I chased him and got him to drop my cat, but it was too late. I don't want to lose another one. I did have one though, who like yours just disappeared. Miss Marie was beautiful and very loving, but also a large cat who never left the yard. My neighbors thought she might have been catnapped, but we'll never know.

My Aunt In-law's weenie dog had pains and scratches on his ribs after he came in once. She believed an owl or a large bird tried to pick him up.
