Cat regurgitation versus vomiting, can they be stress related?

My 13 year old little monster has done one or the other 3 times in the last 20 days. He will be going to the vet on Monday for a checkup, but I'm wondering if someone can tell me what the difference is between the two.

The first time food came up, he'd gotten into some chocolate milk the night before, and the next morning after he ate his usual diet of RC Urinary s/o with laxative (vet ordered), he tossed the food onto the tile floor. I thought it was from having a few paw-dips of chocolate milk before I caught him, and I didn't think anything of it since he went back to eating and using the litter box.

Then, on Monday of this week, I cam home from work to feed him at his regular time and he threw up wet food again. Previous to this, he'd been tearing around the apartment like a madman.

Finally just tonight I went to give him his dinner and he ran to the hallway, bellowed and up came dry food. I recently started feeding him the dry again, Natural Balance Duck and Green Pea L.I.D because his poops are more hair ball than poop lately. I wanted to be sure he was passing the hair and it wasn't hanging around in his system, so I thought more fiber would be the answer.

Some extra info: The constipation started back in August. I had to take him off the dry because my girl cat would try and eat it and make herself sick. She was in the final stages of stomach cancer, and trying to keep the food away from her while keeping it available for him was becoming an issue. Within 3 months he was so backed up, they had to do a manual evacuation to get him moving again. The vet recommended Restoralax for drawing water into his bowel to keep things on the go, and since stress has caused bladder issues for him in the past, I mix it with his wet food and add some water.

There has also been quite a lot of loud noise coming from upstairs. The building is being renovated and this past week has been bad for noise, today was especially bad as they were installing new floors in the apartment above mine. I noticed when there was an influx of noise, he would "perch" on all fours, without his belly touching the ground. Initially, I thought it was indigestion which also made me think about adding more food to his diet to combat the "hungries".

My other cat passed away back in September, so we've been dealing with that bit by bit. He's not too clingy, but I worry that being alone is making him stressed/sick. I also noticed he exhibits some possible symptoms of Feline Hyperesthesia, specifically the racing around the house, the hyper aggression, the compulsive and intense biting and licking at a spot on his back, and the rippling fur before it all starts. I've often wondered how he's handing all this, because it's been 6 months now and I've never had a situation like this before.

Obviously, he's going to the vet Monday morning regardless of whether or not his symptoms change. I am curious though if what he's been doing is vomiting, or regurgitation and whether either of them have links to stress or a stress reaction in cats. It's scary looking at your cat, knowing you've lost one to stomach cancer and trying to not jump to the conclusion that it could be happening again.

Any help is appreciated! Thank you!

Hi, and welcome to TCS :wavey:

I'm so sorry for your loss :alright: My heart goes out to you :hugs:

Has your boy ever been diagnosed with IBD? That's what springs to mind for me. Constipation isn't the usual presentation for IBD but it can happen. Vomiting soon after eating is often caused by the cat eating too fast, but stomach hyperactivity can also trigger it.

Yes, stress can definitely contribute to any kind of digestive issues, and your boy will be grieving for his friend in his own way. I'm sure the nearby construction work won't be helping matters either.

It's great that you're getting him to the vet tomorrow. Stress is definitely something to bring up, as he may well benefit from a calmer (such as Composure) right now...at least until the construction is finished. Ask about the possibility of IBD too - if it is that, there are medications that can really help.

It's natural that you'll be stressed and hypervigilant right now, but try to keep yourself calm and keep your routine as normal as possible. That contains only help both of you.

Good luck with the vet tomorrow. I really hope it goes ok :vibes: Keep us updated :hugs: [article="30316"][/article][article="32758"][/article][article="29660"][/article][article="32479"][/article][article="32396"][/article][article="22470"][/article][article="30138"][/article]
