Our 1 cat (we have 6) is losing some hair on the side of her ear. She's 2 years old and she's mostly a white cat with black on her ears. Our cats are all indoor cats.

I took her to the vet a couple weeks ago for a sore in her ear. He told me to put some hydrocortisone cream on it. That sore went away but now I notice some hair loss on the side of that same ear. Her other ear isn't as bad.

She doesn't shake her head and I don't see her itching her ear. It doesn't seem to bother her.

Her vet told me to try putting some hydrocortisone cream on that area to see if it helps. He said if's it's not better after a week or it gets worse, let him know.

She doesn't have ear mites and no fleas. She doesn't play with our other cats. She wants to play with them but they don't want to play with her.

Any idea what it could be with no itching? Mostly everything I read that cause hair loss involves itching.

She's been on the same food for over a year

Any idea?

Thank you,

Bernice

She might be itching it when you aren't around. My boy is currently over grooming but I swear that I never see him grooming; just the resulting patches of funky fur growth. I will say I sometimes hear him grooming but he is the loudest cat you will ever meet and anyone can hear him grooming from two rooms away.

Anywho, I don't have any ideas but sometimes someone posting gets the conversation going so here I am posting.

Do you have any pictures? Sometimes seeing a picture helps get a response more than words alone.

Where do you think?
Some cats just have less hair on there ears than others also does your cat have any scarring on her ears?? Sometimes the hair won't grow back over a scar.

My Hector had bald spots on her ears but the vet couldn't find anything wrong with them other than she had scars from fighting

Thank you for your replies. I called the vet because it looks like to me it could be infected. I'm taking her in on Monday for an antibiotic shot and I think they said an anti-inflammatory shot.

I'm going to try and post a picture. Let me know what you think.

Many people refuse to have the Convenia antibiotic injection given tor their cats because of the adverse reactions it can cause. The antibiotic effects of medicine may last 2 weeks but the medicine itself can stay in the body for up to 2 months. Here is info to read and discuss with the vet at the apppointment if he / she plans on using Convenia:

Personally I've never had any adverse reactions from convenia. It really helped my Hector when she got a bad bladder infection. Indy had a shot of convenea when she ripped off her claw and it got badly infected.

Not all cats will hav an adverse reaction to Convenia. I'm glad it helped your cat

It's worth discussing the use of Convenia with the vet (or any other medicine the vet prescribes) and weigh the pros and cons of using it and, if an adverse reaction does happen, how the vet will treat that.

True I just wanted to be sure the OP wasn't frightened by some of those links.

My AAHA accredited vet uses convenea regularly and it is generally well tolerated in most cats. Of course all medication has side effects but I personally have never seen any from using convenea. I've heard of the pill type antibiotics having them though especially if the patient is already taking another medication.
