My foster cat Elsa is giving birth. I had been watching for all the signs she was going to have her kittens and nothing! First I heard was tiny cries from my ensuite bathroom.

She was eating normally yesterday and all.

Anyway she's had 3 so far, born roughly 20 minutes apart.

She's looking after them, cleaning them etc but it's taken a while for them to latch on. Two have figured it out. One is still rooting.

I had set up a plastic box inside a crate for her but she insisted on trying to squeeze in between the box and the side of the crate so I took the box out.

She seems more settled now and is letting the babies feed.

Pics aren't great due to the way they're lying. #4 has arrived.

I've managed to weigh some of them and their weights look good, I think.

#1 100g
#2 ? Still feeding!
#3 99g
#4 109g

How or when should I change the bedding? I took away one towel but there's another couple in there. The nest box didn't work out as planned as she wouldn't use it so I've put the towels on the bottom of the crate.

But she's pushed them around and not all her babies are on the towel. One is just on the crate floor.

Ok managed to get another towel out and some fresh blankets in and tucked them under the babies. Next time she stands up, she might move onto the clean ones.

All 4 babies are feeding and mamma is relaxed and purring her head off.

All sounds well with mom and babies! You've done a stellar job!

Put mom's food, water, and litter nearby if there's no room in the crate for them. If it's chilly in the room where they are, add a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel nearby, or a rice sock microwaved for extra warmth.

It looks like we have two boys and two girls.

The tabby and the one with a lot of black are girls.

The white and patchy ones are boys. One seems black and white, the other which I initially thought was black and white has a stripey tail so I reckon he's tabby too and will be more evident when he's fully dry.

Didn't realize you'd started a new thread! Was wondering how it is going. Congratulations. I envy you the fun you are going to have.

All is going great. Elsa is soooo calm and relaxed and totally has it all under control. She strikes me as being quite experienced.

Ok, so we have 4 kittens and as I have 4 kids, they each got to choose a name. We are assuming we have 2 boys and 2 girls as we seem to have 2 sets that look different. [emoji]128514[/emoji] I had no input or say in the names....I think they did well. As these are foster kittens, they may end up with different names but for now, these are their names.

Tabby and white boy: Timmy (chosen by my daughter who loves The Famous Five books with Timmy the dog!)

Next is black and white boy, called Bandit!

Tuxedo girl is Lilly.

Tabby girl is Tulip.

Elsa, all loved up.

#1 Tulip = 100g
#2 Lilly = 100g
#3 Bandit = 99g
#4 Timmy = 109g

From having read many many posts in the same situation, I'm pretty sure these weights are ideal. Four is a good number. Good names too!

When they are older, you can positively sex them with this useful link.

From watching the video I'm fairly sure I'm right.

That said, I spent days looking at the genitalia of my son's two female guinea pigs to ensure they were both female. They looked different! But apparently that can happen with guinea pigs. They're together nearly two years now and no babies so I guess we were right. Lol!

Weigh daily at the same time to make sure they are each gaining 6-10 grams minimum. More is better! Great names! [emoji]128522[/emoji]

When my Harry was maybe 2 days old it was clear he was male.
