Tom and I just got tix for Cat Camp in NYC for this coming Saturday.. We only bought the shopping event tickets because he's pressed for time (mid-terms!) and we weren't sure if we wanted to stick around until the evening when the special events start.  Plus it really upped the cost per person.

Maybe, if we feel like sticking around and there's still space available we'll suck up the extra cost but for now, getting home so he can study is a bit more important. He just needs a break after having the flu for nearly 2 weeks!

Hannah Shaw, The Kitten Lady, was the person I most wanted to see.  He wanted to sit in on Jackson Galaxy's special talk, but those tix were $150!!!  A person! Um, just no.

So, we'll spend the day doing all things cats, shopping for cats and hopefully not adopting a third kitty LOL

Anyone else going to this in the area?

EDIT: I TITLED THIS "CATCON" BUT, IT IS CAT CAMP. MODS PLEASE FIX?

That sounds like fun!
One of the bloggers I follow, Ingrid King, will be there so I'm hoping to bump into her - she has a Q&A going on Saturday which is free.  Her blog, The Conscious Cat, is really good. She's the one that put out the book of Torties that Cocoabean is in
She knows my long time friend of the Sometimes Cats Herd You blog, so it would be nice to make the connection.

Very cool! Is Ingrid King the one who appeared on Animal Planet's Cats 101 for the Colorpoint Shorthair? I believe that episode featured an expert on cat behavior, who was also named Ingrid, and had Siamese and Colorpoint Shorthair cats. It would be cool if that was her!

Pretty sure this is someone else. She has tortoiseshell cats and always has. Her blog mainly focuses on them but also has good articles about cat health and happiness.  Sometimes gets a bit too new age/holistic for my tastes but overall good info.

Just found the video clip I was thinking of, turns out it's featuring Ingrid Johnson, a cat behaviorist. I'll attach a link if you're curious:

I'm new to this site and will probably go to Cat Camp Sunday afternoon, but I only have an hour or so at 2:30ish. If you see someone wearing a t-shirt from New York International Children's Film Festival, that's me & where I'll be before & after.

Following up!

We went yesterday, early.

The event was smaller than I imagined it would be, but glad we went.

First off, I ran into Ingrid King, the blogger of The Conscious Cat. I like her writing a lot, and she knows another blogger friend so I introduced myself to her. Had a short chat as I didn't want to suck up her time.

There were a lot of tables with people selling cat related items. We wound up buying a large wool hiding pod in a blue/teal combo - but that was it.  We're not much for feline housewares and such although Tom saw a couple of t-shirts he wanted but decided otherwise.

Also saw The Kitten Lady, Hannah Shaw and her photographer boyfriend Andrew Martilla. Again did not speak to them as Hannah was very involved in what appeared to be a conversation with folks she was friendly with.  Andrew, was busy shooting photos of Hannah lol.  So, didn't want to get in his way either.

There were a LOT of cats up for adoption there.  That was really nice to see and many from rescues I'm already following.  There was one older male cat who Tom utterly fell in love with - he had a congenital deformity of one of his back legs.  He was so sweet and loving. But we really are not in a position to add a third to our home, mainly because our older one is ill and we don't want to stress him out by incorporating a newcomer.

Anyway - I took some pix but didn't break out the Nikon since it really wasn't necessary.  Enjoy!

Odd-eyed cutey! He was very social!

Kittens! *splort*

Hanna and Andrew

Hannah Shaw - The Kitten Lady. I want her shoes :D

This guy looks like he has one of the Oriental breeds in his background - what a profile! So angular.

Winner of best cat tree inho - The Eiffel Tower

More Hannah and Andrew

Last and best, is our Cocoabean in her new pod bed. She approves!

I was there for about 90 minutes Sunday afternoon. I was hoping there would have been more vendors, but I did get to meet the one I most wanted to & see - Hauspanther's Kate Benjamin. I'm thinking of getting one of her cat perches & it was great to be able to discuss specifics of my space and see the actual perch in person. One of the vendors I thought wasn't in the best interest of cats-the cat wine people. It's non-alcoholic, but laced with catnip, valerian etc & seemed to be marketed to the lonely cat owner looking for a drinking buddy. It was great to see a couple of cat documentaries in mid-production & I wish them good luck. Capnip Nation is one of the names, can't recall the other. And it's always great to see the groups that have cats available for adoption. I did feel a little guilty in that I've lived with my cat for three months now & he still won't let me stroke him the way a lot of those cats did. I came home smelling of other cats, which probably didn't help matters. I saw Jackson Galaxy signing pictures. I've only seen some of his shows from season 1 & 2; he seems much thinner now.

I was hoping to see Kate Benjamin but no such luck. We've purchased a few things via Hauspanther over the years and I really like their style sense.

Hopefully it was successful enough to warrant another try next year.  If so, I'd imagine a lot more vendors will come aboard due to it being popular.

The main reason we didn't sit in any of the special events was cost.  Honestly, I think those ticket prices were a bit much and made it too "elite" to join in for some. We can afford it, but even I wasn't up for spending $150 a person to meet Jackson Galaxy.  I could have bought 2 new good sized cat trees for that cash

He was autographing photos & taking pictures with people for a donation to his foundation. I don't know if there was a minimum set amount for the donation, but it was a long line. I didn't hang around to see if people were able to ask him questions while the signing was happening. Kate was wandering around & wasn't there on my first pass by her items, but luckily she was there right before I left.
