My lovely cat, Tinka just had 6 kittens. However today we found one of them dead and we have no idea why. They were floppy like their spine had been broken. Does anyone have any idea what could have happened?

Impossible to say. Six kittens is a lot for a mother to feed so be grateful the kitten passed now & did not suffer. These things happen unfortunately.

You say "they" were floppy. One passed away. Are there others who are floppy? If so, there may be a neurological birth defect.

Sometimes the mother carries the kittens in there mouth from place to place and it may be a possibilitiy that the one kitten that you saw with the broken spine this morning could have been dropped out of the moms mouth while moving. So sad either way.

Can you set up a nest in a dark, quiet, private place - like a closet - where mom can settle in with her kittens?

This would enable mom to feel safe and secure, and she could stop moving her kittens. It's not necessary or healthy for mom to keep moving her kittens.

Agreed, mom is very unhappy and needs to feel secure and safe where her nest is.

The least amount of people and foot traffic possible, hidden, private, quiet, low lights/somewhat dark, confined, comfortable.

A highly stressed mom is unpredictable, so please be sure to help her find an appropriate spot ASAP.
