Hello, again. In order to settle a long-standing dispute in my family, I am turning to you kind folks for helping in best matching this cat to a breed. This is Oliver, though he also responds to Hey, You and Doofus. My mother adopted him from a shelter about five years ago and they said he was feral but if he was, there's never been any sign of it whatsoever. Honestly, he is probably the best cat I've ever met. Of course, he doesn't think he's a cat. He eats out of the dog bowl, drinks the dog's water, runs for ice cubes, comes when you call his name, and sleeps on the dog's bed (poor dog has to sleep on the floor). You needn't ever call his name, however, since he's essentially at your heels at all times. When you're trying to escape in the night via slumber, he sleeps outside the door or on the landing of the stairs (presumably guarding us, but more often than not, inadvertently tripping us).

Other notable characteristics? There is not an aggressive bone in his body. He likes to sit like a human on the couch, bottom down and one paw up on the arm rest. Chirping is his main form of communication. We live in Florida, and he goes out on the screened-in porch and likes to hunt lizards for us; because he's hungry, however, he only leaves us half the lizards for our meal... the front half, which is generally considered to be the best half, apparently, so I suppose it's a kind gesture. Despite stealing all my dog's resources, they're best friends and often sleep and play together. Finally, he's what I can only describe as floppy. You can cradle him, hold him upside-down, toss him over your shoulder... none of which is easy, let me tell you, but only because he's rather large (not fat, just big!) As a teenager, I enjoyed plopping him on my lap and forcing his paws to perform hand games like pat-a-cake with my sister (he wasn't bad!) Absolutely nothing phases him.

Please help me solve breed/background riddle which has plagued our family for years!

Shhhh, you are sabotaging my persuasive efforts, as my stepfather suggested Birman.

I'm advocating Ragdoll. I suppose it's hard to tell, however; they all look rather similar...
Do they?  Well, I'm sure you're right.

I was also thinking either of the two.
He is SO beautiful!! I think I'm in love. :heart2:
Sounds like you've been blessed with a wonderful kitty!
...And it looks like he kind of matched your dog too. Lol!
Is that a Golden retriever? Love them too, they are the sweetest.

To less-experienced eyes like my own, they most certainly do.

In actuality, I know the bare minimum about cat breeds and am more than ready to defer to the wisdom of the users of this site.
What a sweet looking cat.
Thank you! I believe he thinks so too -- he certainly always looks pleased with himself.

Aww, thank you! We're certainly in love too. My mom always says that he's the best money she's ever spent and my stepdad, who insists he's a dog person, loves Oliver to death. I've caught him, ex-Air Force member, current car mechanic, cooing at Oliver. We all adore him.

And he does! Our dog is actually a Great Pyrenees! We know he's pure-bred and we've got the papers to prove it, haha.
No questions there, at least. The cats in our family have all the mystery about them.

Oliver is a complete stunner! So pretty. Does he ever sleep on top of the dog? I used to know a Great Pyrenees who was used as a giant pillow by the cats of his household. :D
From your wonderful description of his laid-back personality, I would suspect Ragdoll in his ancestry. They're famously mellow cats. Wherever he came from, he's clearly got a good home now!

Thank you so much! I told my mom that he made it to the front page of the site and she's so pleased! (: We haven't caught him using our dog as a pillow, but they are definitely thick as thieves and sleep together often!
I was linked to a PDF of showing standards for Ragdolls and I'd have to agree! He even has the oval-shaped eyes which slant upwards... I'd say moderately, but they could be slightly depending on who looks at him, and slightly would put him in the Birman category again! So who knows! Definitely has the ragdoll personality though!

I must admit that I don't know much about cats, but I've heard that Birmans are affectionate, easy-going and generally calm cats who are quite adaptive to their social environments, and who tend to enjoy the company of dogs as well.  My memory's fading these days, owed to increasing age, but I've seen both Ms. Baker's bloodlines and those of the Daytons, and as a general rule, they have a certain 'look' about them in the triangle formed by the eyes and nose that's apparent even in so-called "Pet Quality Cats."

You've not mentioned the handsome Oliver's weight, but since you're leaning in the direction of him being a Ragdoll - strictly out of curiosity - is he also Ragdoll size?  Neutered males only but very seldom go much over 25 pounds (yes, I do know that there have been exceptions, but 12kg+ Ragdolls are generally older, sedentary neutered males like the famous I. P. Ragtime King), but very often settle in around twenty pounds, while Birmans are, by and large, roughly only half the Ragdoll's size, with a "very big" male approaching 15 pounds.  Just curious about Oliver.  He's a beautiful kitty.

The handsome I. P. Ragtime King, circa 1997.

Oops! I thought I mentioned that he was rather large in my original post! In his last weigh-in at the vet, he was a hearty 14lbs, which does not really help clear anything up -- a heavy Birman or a light Ragdoll. I suspect he'll get heavier with age, as most creatures do. The only reason I lean so heavily towards a Ragdoll conclusion is his ridiculous floppiness. One can't even walk past him without him falling to one side, limp and begging for his stomach to be assaulted with cuddles. Indeed, that's how I picked him out at the shelter I was volunteering at. I saw a beautiful, fluffy kitten who'd just been neutered, microchipped, and fully vaccinated -- high as a kite and surely in some kind of pain -- that promptly began flipping over in his cage so I could pet his belly. I thought, "This cat is ridiculous," and then immediately called my mom. We've been carelessly tossing him around (much to his enjoyment) ever since. I found a picture of him in his cage, actually, looking rather thoughtful. Also two others that I'm only including because he's so diddly-darn cute and I adore him, and so I can't resist.

He is absolutely gorgeous - so's the goggie !  As to getting heavier with age, I'll plead the fifth.  What's most important is simply that Oliver is Loved - and that much is apparent.  He's a lovely Birman !
