Hello everyone.  I'm new to the site but need a little help.  I rescued an outdoor kitten a few months ago.  He had a bad case of roundworms and was de-wormed.  At the time I didn't know too much about it so he was de-wormed at the vet and had his stool checked 2 weeks later which came back clear so another dose was not suggested to me.  I also have another cat.  So fast forward 3 months later, the kitten coughs up a worm.  We take him to the vet and they tell us that the de-wormer doesn't kill larvae so we probably never got it all the first time.  Ok so now I've been giving him de-worming medicine from the vet for the past 3 days.  The other cat was tested and does not have worms.  My question is how long do I keep my cats separated at this point.  My kitten is supposed to be re-checked in about 3 weeks but it's impossible for me to keep him confined to one room and away from my other cat for that long.  Plus, after the 3 weeks, I'm assuming the worms will be dead but the larvae will not be anyway.  I have 2 litter pans and they each use both of them.  I currently have the kitten in one room with his litter pan and am washing it out completely after each bowel movement.  Is it ok to keep the cats together as long as I continuously wash both of the litter pans out?  Just looking for any advice from anyone that might have been in this situation....one cat having worms and the other not.  Also, how can you completely de-worm a cat if the dewormer doesn't kill larvae and they just keep coming back.  Thank you so much in advance and I apologize for the long confusing post!!!  Thanks!!! =)

Someone else will chime in I'm sure . . . but I honestly think you need to deworm both cats for the same period of time.  My suggestion would be to deworm them both, then deworm again in two weeks, and one more time two weeks after that second deworming.

Thank you for the suggestion!  I will definitely bring it up with my vet!  I agree with you and after reading up on it that my kitten should have been de-wormed that way the first time!
