Anyone have any experience with a cat having an anal gland rupture?  My cat's ruptured and she'd chewed the fur off.  I noticed first thing on Monday morning and had her to the vet within a few hours.  They cleaned the site, made sure the gland was empty and gave her a shot of Convenia Injection antibiotic that lasts two weeks.  We were sent home with "yesterday's news" litter.  It's been 3 days and she's doing ok.  Her appetite is a bit off but not too bad.

How long should it take to heal?? I called the vet today to ask but they didn't get back to me and now they are closed.  I will call again tomorrow but thought I'd see if anyone out there has experience with this??  What should I expect for a recovery time?  Ball park figure.....???

I had a dog who had to have his anal glands emptied, and it took a week or so for it to heal. It was not a problem at all for him.

My cat had a ruptured anal glad and it healed up seems like in about one week.  We did have a cream to put on it, although she licked it off about as quickly as we put it on
.  We also applied warm compressed to it for several days.  That may have helped with the healing process.  (She ALSO got the convenia shot)

One of my cats has just had this issue - one day she would not eat so I was on alert. The next day she was licking a lot so I took her in on Monday. I noticed Monday morning she was back to breakfast like normal - apparently sunday evening she had ruptured her abscessed anal gland, so felt temp better. They cleaned it up, one side was apparently thick as toothpaste! She got a 2 week antibiotic shot, pain shot, fluids and was sent home in the cone. She did not adapt! She is just Frozen after bumping it a couple times. She thinks something is chasing her. It is the following Sunday and we are in a routine. About every 1-2 hours I take her in a confined room and remove the cone, she uses the litter box, eats, we play etc. The vet told me after 1 week I could take the cone off if I was home to watch. I am afraid - I know she hates it BUT I also know that all she can think about almost is licking back there. The vet explained that the bacteria they need in their mouth would be bad to make it's way into the open wound. So how can I tell if she is far enough along to phase out the cone? I keep trying to look, took pictures etc and I am clueless. Once the cone is off there will be no catching her to put it back in - I will freely admit, she is smarter than me!

I should add, initially I would hold warm washcloth compress to her back side and now have been holding gauze soaked in warm water & Epsom salts... the indignity of that!

Hello Anne...
If I recall properly, I believe I had the cone on Janie about 1 week? I'm trying to remember being it was back in February. I initially did not have the cone on for the first few days and wish I had...all she wanted to do was lick the sore spot especially after I put some of the antibiotic powder the vet gave me. She had the antibiotic shot and also I was to powder the spot she'd chewed. I did eventually get the cone on her after the first few days.

I'm sure every situation and cat is different but the main indicator for me removing the cone was that it was about 90% healed?? It was looking pretty good and once I took the cone off I don't remember her bothering with the site anymore being it was almost totally healed and not annoying her anymore.

The best thing is if you can get a good look at it, and it looks pretty darn good and pretty much healed you could take the cone off...the vet did say about 1 week? You said it's been about 1 week but take a look and use your best judgement...I know that's not a "cut and dried" answer. I usually second guess myself with caring for my baby too. You want to do what's best, I know.

My Janie hated the cone too. She had one of the soft ones but still didn't like it. I can't blame her.

Again, just try to get a good look at the site if you can, it seems like Janie knows when I'm looking at her rear :) which is a lot since Feb when she had the incident..I'm always check that things are ok back there :)

Thanks! I need to get a look... From what I can tell (sorry to be graphic) there is no open wound, but it is kind of dry and crusty looking... I am so torn. We have a good routine going so I Feel like maybe, if I cannot get a look that makes me confident, maybe I will take her in to the vet mid-week instead of waiting to full 2 weeks. Then we will have an idea how it is going. My cats hate carriers, car rides, etc. I know it is bc I did not do it enough when young... But hindsight! Like I said, once she is out of the cone, I am gonna have trouble capturing her to go back to the vet. Of the 3, she is the worst to have this... of course!

One last question - and I can ask the vet too, once she is healing or healed (wound is closed) can her licking really hurt? I mean breaks my heart she cleaned herself up when it ruptured, poor thing. They want to be tidy.

I have bought 3 soft cones, one feels as heavy as plastic, one seems easy to get out of....and the other is inflatable, so I am dubious. I just want to do what is best.

Not funny I know... Shirley has the clear hard cone and all I can think about is having it be a martini glass for halloween! But you know... cats don't like to be laughed at.
I wouldn't want to laugh at my cat... she may kick me out of the house :) I say it's her house, she's just letting me live there :)

From what I remember, that's about the way Janie's wound was when I took the cone off -- dry, crusty and a LOT smaller than the day she went to the vet. Once you're kitty is healed, there should be no problem her cleaning the area. It would just be business as usual...no open wound for bacteria to get into so I'm sure she'll be fine cleaning herself at that point.

I'm pretty sure no kitties like car rides either... here's a quote from online:
Motion sickness in cats is a common problem. Unlike many dogs that can be “trained” to comfortably ride in cars, cats prove much more challenging to overcome their anxiety. Most motion sickness cases in cats are caused primarily by the stress and anxiety associated with travel.
