I'm not really familiar with trees (low ceilings) but there's a few things to keep in mind if you want it as a scratching surface.
I'd make sure it is not wobbly and has a variety of different surfaces more the better. The post my Indy has has three surfaces, cardboard, rope, and carpet.
The most popular carpets for scratching are the berber ones with loops the claws catch on it better.
Not really a specific brand recommendation, but just make sure it's stable. When you're at the pet supply store, test out the cat trees. Put your hand on it and jiggle it back and forth. The base and all the "branches" should stay securely in place. If a cat tree collapses under a cat's weight, the cat will, understandably, not want to play with it again.
