I have a male neutered cat and a female spayed both 3  years old.  They grew up together so have a harmony, but the female is basically a loner and never liked him that much.  My boy is very social and loves other cats, and she won't play with him.  I am considering adopting another cat but would really need for the new cat to like my male.  Should I stick with a kitten so they can adjust more?  And do you recommend another male or female?

Thanks in advance for any insights!

Hi  Have more than 3 have found males territorial BUT being fixed makes a huge difference, some males are

big babies I have one male the girls (can be Divas) will pick on him, always a gentleman...

Depends on their personalities to, my tuxedo female China will dive into any disagreement

going on fighting is NOT permitted Here she keeps the peace monitoring 24/7  my male cats

will run into a crate for protection if they see her coming to tell them off!
  (she's so small)

I'm above her because I feed them
(snuggled beside me knows I'm talking about her)

So having 3 is going to change the dynamics . You know them

my guess is your female is the dominating kitty of the two, it would be wonderful to take in

a kitty 1- 2- 3  years that needs a good home, over a young kitten but 4-6 months maybe

easier for her to accept then kitten grows up blends with them. When bringing home say another

male you never introduce them all at the same time, it's gradual -listed in article section,

if your male is playful to observe another cat playing sweetly he maybe swept off his feet watching

the kitten play then not really give a hoot because it's a young male. Lots of people have 3 cats no problem.

Whatever you settle on ask for a trial period just to make sure he/she's a good fit.

*if indoors only, well fed (lots of moist) lots of room exercised through play = Happy Cats.

Thanks!  Yes my female is alpha for sure.  My boy is more mellow.  I think a younger male, or a mellow female would be best bet.

We have three cats. The male, Carrot is 4 years old and is a big cuddly bug. Angua is a 2 year old female cat she is more of a diva. Ruby was the third cat we introduced, she is also very cuddly and hangs out with our male all the time.

For some reason a third cat is always a challenge. It took a long time of our cats being separated to get along. Still we have some problems because Carrot is overprotective of Angua (who he essentially raised) and he'll get angry if Angua and Ruby play too roughly.

Most of the time they all do really well together so it definitely works.

From what I've read on this site 2 males and one female seems to be the better combination - two males will play together and the female will keep them in check. Two females together tend to be - the word 'diva' is used a lot here - with each other even when sprayed.
