Hi, I'm fostering a cat who's been through a horrible experience - her owner killed himself in front of her and she was stuck in the room with the body for 24 hours or more. Then she was roughly grabbed and taken to the vets after the body was found. She's been in a cage at her vets for a few days, then taken to me Sunday pm. She's basically a nervous wreck, hissing/spitting/growling constantly, not eating much, but using the litter tray ok. Unable to get near her without being scratched. She's in my spare room, which is nice and quiet, and lives under the sofa, only coming out when I'm not about. Feliway is on. No significant improvement in 4 days. Would appreciate any suggestions how I can speed up her recovery in order for her to be rehomed quickly, if anyone's been through something similar? Thanks.

Hi,

Thank you so much for caring so much about this cat.

I( would approach her like I would a new feral cat.

I would suggest just being very calm and confident around her. Don't approach her and don't look into her eyes. Just let her come out of her shell at her pace. I would try giving some good wet food to build trust. She may not take it right away but she should come around. It will take a little time to build trust. At some point you'll want to just sit in the room and at first be quiet then after a few days talk softly to her. Food does wonders to build trust. So use food. I use warm chicken thigh meat. If possible if you can give her a scratching post and/or a cat tree that will help.

Let's see how she responds. I am happy to help as long as needed. Thank you again so much for what you are doing for this cat. You are wonderful.

Please feel free to ask anything anytime. I am here for you both.
