How often should I use the deshedding tool?

Hi everyone,

My 4-5 month kitty has a very long hair and as you can imagine she sheds a lot. When she was smaller I used that kind of comb like brush with metal bristles but it does not work well for me now.

When I use the very thick deshedding tool (similar to what some people use for dogs) A LOT of hair comes out (minimized hairs around house by quite a lot).

ANyways, my question is how frequently can I use it on her? I could basically do it every day if id like and there would still be hair on it. How much is too much?

Thank you!

She looks like she might have some Persian in her and I know Persians are recommended daily grooming it they will tolerate it. Personally, if she tolerates it I would brush her daily but maybe use the deshedding tool only 2-3 times a week. More frequently during the season changes when she sheds more.

Hi there. Thanks. Yes I think she's Persian/Turkish Angora mix - her back hair is very long :)

So deshedder is ok 2-3 times a week? I brush her daily with a wide tooth brush that doesn't really take off any hair.

My worry about the actual deshedding tool is that I might be taking off to much since there is SO MUCH hair every time I brush :D Luckily she likes it and enjoys it.

Persian troubles I guess :D

Perhaps not absolutely germane to the issue, but I use a broad-toothed comb (like an hairdresser's comb) on Clawed-Ya (hair length 3 to 3½ inches) daily, and as long as she's mat and tangle-free, a de-shedding comb is superfluous.  I like the basic comb because it's not prone to breaking or shearing hair midway, so the coat remains supple and, I expect, a little more comfortable for her.  I do the same with Bob, the Norwegian Forest Cat, though I still need the de-shedder (and sometimes the scissors) now and then, since he's really little more than a long-hair-covered Patton Tank with legs and a tail.

Thanks. So I do use wide tooth comb daily but unfortunately if I don't use the de-shedder everything will be covered in her fur :)

So you're saying that everything's not supposed to be covered in fur?

I use a de-shedder comb when I notice a cream sheen over everything in my flat
So, I bought them their own.  It doesn't remove very much hair but it clearly feels nice on the skin, and leaves the fur ever so soft, silky, and well-groomed
