We've always had some hair issues because our cats *love* eating my long hair. I try to clean it up when it sheds, but they usually get some anyway. So, lately we've been trying a number of different things to control hairballs/hair in feces, including cat grass. They are super into it! But, they tend to pull each blade out one at a time. This results in them pulling out not just the blade, but the root and the bulb/seed too.

So far, I've been pulling the root off and giving them just the blade. But do I have to? Can they eat the whole thing or will the seed hurt them/cause a blockage?

I've had that same problem. They would pull the whole thing up and scatter dirt everywhere! I notice they eat the sprouts that come up under my bird feeder too, and that is a grain sprout, millet I think. They pull it up by the roots too and eat it, I have never noticed them throwing up after, or getting sick.  I guess the thing to watch for is what the grass is in the first place, if it is oat grass, which is a common cat grass, is OK to eat all of, because people sprout it and pulverize the whole plant as a health food.I would look on the package and Google the grass to see what it says. I can't imagine them putting out a grass that is poisonous on any part of it, that would be really stupid, but you never know. If you are worried, I would cut the grass with a scissors, like a trim, that way your cats have the grass, and it will grow back. I don't know though, I think half of their fun is pulling it up and making a mess!

I have done that in the past, but my boys aren't interested in being given grass to eat like that. They really enjoy pulling it up and shredding the bigger blades.:D I think they just like the feel of chewing long grass. Nowadays I make them a planter of grass, using a firmer soil than the very light potting mix the catgrass tubs come in. I have to get creative to keep them from it while the grass grows long enough to withstand their attention, but it makes less mess that way.
