Beware of Advantage II for large cats

One month ago, I opened a brand new 6 dose box of Advantage II for large cats, removed the first two doses from the package and applied it to both my cats. Within 2 hours, both cats were shaking and having seizures. We immediately rushed them to the emergency animal hospital and were told to double check the tubes that were applied to them. It turned out that 2 tubes of K-9 Advantix for large Dogs had been packed in with 4 doses of Advantage II for large cats! Thankfully, after being hospitalized for 3 days and over $3,000 later, our cats survived. It was at this point, I contacted Bayer to advise them of this horribly dangerous mistake. To make a very long story short, Bayer has rejected any responsibility for our suffering and out-of-pocket costs. They told me it was my error for not checking the tubes before they were applied. We are outraged! Bayer had a million excuses as to why it wasn't their fault, but, when it comes right down to it, they also have no sense of responsibility to their consumer! As a warning, I would recommend avoiding using Bayer animal products!

If the package was completely cellophane wrapped from the manufacturer, that is something that should be reported to the FDA as well as Bayer because that is a manufacturing error.  If not, then Bayer is within its rights to say ANYONE could have changed out the vials. It IS true that you should always check the tubes of anything you are using and do not trust the outer packaging.  You are certainly lucky your cats survived!

A large dog dose of Advantix is consideraly larger than a dose of large cat Advantage. I'm not even sure how that much product could be applied to a cat without it running all over. But, yes, if you bought it from an accredited pet pharmacy and it was still in the original shrink-wrapped packaging, I'd be reporting that to anyone who would take the report. The BBB, the USDA (I think the USDA handles animal drugs, but if the FDA also has something to do with it, them too), and the company where you bought it, etc.

This is why I much prefer revolution. It is the same ingredients for both dogs and cats. So a mix up would not be as harmful. It would be bad for a cat to get a larger dose but at least it wouldn't be getting a toxic substance that wasn't meant for cats.

So is Advantage. But Advantix is an entirely different product, made only for dogs. That's why it's a very serious situation if the company actually mixed them up.

Advantage II is also the same ingredients for dogs and cats.  The fact that AdvanTIX got into the package is appalling because that is a different product altogether and should NEVER be used on cats because the TICK part of the combination is lethal to cats.

I fully agree, if it was in the original sealed pkg, somehow it must have happened at the plant, and it's a damn good thing it didn't cost a cat's life.

What gets me is, why Bayer chose a name so close to advantage that people get the two mixed up, consumers I mean.

I even had a fellow rescuer years back had been given advantix rather than advantage by the fill in receptionist at her vet's office, of course causing big trouble and a hospital stay for several days which the vet provided naturally.

Oh gosh what a nightmare!!! When I used advantage I always double checked because Advantix can kill cats. What about the store you bought them from?? Bayer makes more money from the product than the money they have to pay for the cats it kills. That product should never be over the counter !!!!
